The Early People

It is believed that there has been humans in these mountains between 10 000 and 8000 BC

American Indian people inhabiting the northern mountains in modern times include the Shuswap and Kutenai of British Columbia, the Coeur d’Alene and Nez Percé of Idaho, and the Flathead of Montana.

Other groups in the South-West, include the Hopi, Pueblo and Navajo tribes.

The Plains Indians were nomads which meant they moved from one place to another to find food. These Indians that lived in the Eastern Rockies were the Blackfoot, the Crow and the Cheyenne tribes.

Choose any one of these Indian tribes and do research on their lives, what they ate, their customs, how they lived and why are there not many left of them.

The Modern People

Europeans started coming to the Southwest of the mountain range in the 16th century. They explored and exploited the land for economic gain and came in contact with the indigenous people living here. Most of the time these contacts turned into conflict.

A lot of the group started moving away in order to avoid contact with the Europeans. Today there are a lot of reservations where the native Americans can live in peace by themselves, independent from the outside world.

Although settlement is now widespread throughout most of the Rockies, population is concentrated in urban areas generally located at the base of mountains, along railways, or in river valleys.

Do research and find out how it is living on a reservation. Do they have their own believes and laws? Why do they choose to live there?

You can read here for some extra information on visiting a reservation.

Why would most people now live at the base of the mountain or close to the railways or the river?
