Sometimes After-School Learning Is Not The Highest Priority

in Educationlast year

Hi there. In this education post, I talk about how sometimes after school learning is not the highest priority for some students and families.

This is based on a few observations from my work in the private education sector.

After School Education Services Can Be Expensive

In my area after school education services like Kumon, Mathnasium, Oxford Learning Center and private tutoring services can be expensive. Prices can be like $30 CAD per hour to $40 CAD per hour or a couple of hundred dollars per month.

Those with lower incomes may not even consider after school educational services programs as the costs can be too much. These households would prioritize other expenses such as food and energy.

More Fun Hobbies Than After School Learning

There is only some much money parents can spend on their kids (assuming a budget). In addition, there is only so much time for kids after schools. Kids and young students may not want to do even more learning after a long day at school. They may want something more fun and enjoyable such as sports, martial arts training, dance classes, playing video games at home or watching TV.

Home Life Factors

There are factors in a family household that may not make it possible for the child to do after-school learning. It can be financial issues as stated in an earlier section. It could be a time availability issue where the parents are working from 9AM to 5PM. There is also student fatigue where the student is too tired to do any more work after a long day at school.

Parent Vs Child Conflicts On Learning

There are cases where the parent and child(s) do not share the same vision for their child's education, development and future. Parents send their child to learning services or tutoring lessons but the child may not want to do anything. The kids may pretend to be tired, they may resist help, they may not try their best as a rebellion tactic against the parent's wishes. The child could be lazy or there could be unreasonable high expectations from parents to have their child do well at school.
