Hi there. In this education post, I would like to talk about stubborn students.
Refusal To Do Work
For whatever reason, students don't want to do homework or school work. The work could be boring or not enjoyable. This would drive some students to not do school work. There are some students who could be lazy when it comes to homework and school. School may not be a top priority for them as other things are more important to them.
The lack of doing work does hurt the development of the student. A lot of homework does build knowledge and skill for general purposes, everyday scenarios and certain situations. Time not committed to work in the early years could hurt the student long term. Anything not learned in the early years may never get learned in the later years. There may be fundamental gaps in knowledge for an adult if important things are not taught at a young age.

Going Against Parent's Advice
In general, parents want the best for the kids. They may encourage their kids to go for career A, B, C or D. Some parents may want their kid(s) to eventually take over the family business. Some parents may want their child to be like them when they were a pro athlete.
In some places, it is encouraged to always follow the parents' advice. What if the child does not actually want to do want the parents want them to do? The parents may want the child to be a pharmacist, but the child wants to be a doctor or a dentist or a pro athlete? Should the parents control the kids education choices and life? Is it a failure if the child ends up being a chiropractor instead of a doctor? The answers to these questions may vary between families and students. It may not be a bad for a student to go against what the parents want. It is the student's life.

I Was Stubborn As A Student
Before I ended my high school years, I would get a few relatives asking me what I want to do. They seemed interested in me for whatever reason. One relative would suggest you should do accounting and another would say don't do mathematics as it's too hard.
Both of my parents never pushed for me to go for a certain career. Why did these relatives though? I don't know. Since I was somewhat stubborn, I went against the relatives and went for what I wanted. Yeah, university math got tough in some courses but I had good talent, a good work ethic and some grit to do okay in the many courses I took.
