Many animals use a kind of language.They use signals which show how they feel. For example,we know if a cobra is angry it raises its hood.When a bee has found some food,it goes back to it's home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them,but it does a little dance in the air .This tells the bees where the food is and how far away it is.
Some animals show how they feel by making sounds. We can tell if a cat is pleased because it purrs,we can tell if a dog is angry because it barks.Birds make several sounds and each as its own meaning.
Sometimes we human make sounds in the same way. We make sounds like oh! or ah! To show how we feel about something or when we drop something on our toes.But we have something that no animal has a large number of word which have the meaning of things, actions, emotions or ideas We are able to give each other information,to tell other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing down words we can remember what has happened or send messages to people far away .No animal can do this, some birds like parrot can be taught to say words but they don't know what they mean. They cannot use the words.
No one knows how man learnt to make words. Perhaps he began by imitating animals.Perharps he grunted like a pig when he lifted something heavy, perhaps he imitated some sounds around him.
In some way he learnt to make words as the centuries went by he made more and more words. This is what we mean by language.
The connection in the world is through languages.
People living in different countries made different words.Today there are about 1500 different languages in the world. Each has many thousands of words. A very large English dictionary, for example contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not use all these.The words you know are called vocabulary.
Now there is another type of language called the visual language which as to do with combination of lines,pattern,colours and shape to express an idea, communicate and also expresses feelings.
