In the past I have only posted to #deepdives if I felt like I really dug in and researched something and provided a lot of references. Other things I'd usually post in #informationwar, or #proofofbrain. I tried to guess at the best of those three communities based upon the flavor of my posts. Once in awhile I'll write about music, or game development and might stray from those communities but those have been the primary communities I post to for some time now.
As I understand it DeepDives is going through a change and soon a new Layer 2 token will be available there. I don't know much about it other than it will be called Delve. I have been asked to post there more often. I suppose I can justify that as I am always taking deepdives into my own mind as I write. I often have no clue where a post will end up going as I begin writing it. I have a starting point but the stream of consciousness turns the entire process into kind of a short mental adventure. Where will my mind take me today?
I am interested in learning more about delve. How will it differ? Will it follow the approach #vyb is using which I very much endorse? More communities where down voting is not a thing will do a lot to turn this more into a market place of ideas. When you go into a store you buy what you are interested in. You don't stop to place little sticky notes on products you have no interest in saying "You can't pay for this!" and that is essentially what occurs with the down vote mechanism here.
In addition, the entire debate over rewards is subjective and always amounts to some authoritarian mindset people thinking they should have the authority to decide what people are interested in and what something is worth. That too goes against the market place of ideas.
Now I do know why some downvoting of rewards to protect the pool needs to exist. In the past there were some large accounts that just kept up voting accounts they controlled that often were just posting bot written short pieces with google scraped images and they were doing so for large amounts. They were rapidly putting their own posts from alt accounts into the trending and each passing day the more and more centralized the rewards pool to themselves.
I could see why people would counter that. It was indeed a bad thing for the experiment that began with steem and continues here.
Yet as happens with authoritarians they take a SOUNDS GOOD reason and then decide to subjectively apply it wherever they want. This is especially true if you piss them off.
This is human nature. We can't just magically make it go away. We also can't really come up with a mechanism to prevent it that would not further centralize things. The things that can prevent it usually can be circumvented simply by using multiple accounts. Furthermore centralization of power can be benevolent at first but over time as the original controllers of that power cycle out it invariably will enter times of corruption. This is why we want to avoid such centralization.
How then do we solve the down voting abuse problem? How do we try to keep an environment from becoming a toxic financially censored zone?
I didn't chime in on solutions as I didn't have one that I couldn't determine how to exploit or circumvent. I knew there was a problem. I just had no viable solution.
#vyb seems like an experiment with promise and it just might work. I would hope that Delve and other layer 2 tokens from communities who truly believe in free speech watch it closely and if it proves to work they should use a similar model.
At the moment I will post to other communities but #vyb and #pob will likely always be two of my 10 tags. They are attempting to do what I think really needed to be done.
I know some great content creators that were active on steemit, and some here. I've seen them produce great things and then catch the attention of the wrong powerful accounts. I watched them financially consistently driven to zero or near that. It was hard to justify producing the level of content they were if they could earn nothing for their time.
Me... I haven't been writing here with the goal of earning. I use it as a form of catharsis.
If I were doing this for earning I'd likely do a lot less stream of consciousness writing and I'd potentially do some serial series.
I may go that route in the future in the game development space, but I have no such plans at this time.
I look forward to trying new experiments and if they work then that could be a great thing for all of HIVE.
More to follow :)
I am eager to know more!
I am not sure if the downvotes are the problem. Maybe it's rather the distribution of power? I see it as a problem that anyone can simply go and buy almost unlimited power, if only they are rich enough. This surely talks to the few greedy psychopaths...
When every post and every comment you do is downvoted to oblivion it becomes a problem after a few months!
I hear you, but that could not happen that easily if power was e.g. capped/distributed more evenly... but that does sound like regulation. At least it shouldn't resonate with greed that easily.
No easy way to do that either. Most solutions people think of are easily skirted by using multiple accounts. The powerful accounts here that tend to downvote already tend to do that by coordinated downvote from multiple accounts they control.
I am aware of folks with more than 10k accounts, if they are to be believed.
By the way his reply to you above was immediately downvoted.
These tiny downvotes are like bugs, and he gets so many of them!
I guess whenever there is money involved, things can be derailed much quicker.
Yeah, just harmless bugs...
Who cares right?
But shitloads of them!
Yes. The monetary component is what makes it different here. Though it also makes it possible for people to devote time making content.
For the record I've said in the past that if it truly is about protecting the reward pool then I'd be fine with no down votes and simply setting a maximum amount which no post can earn beyond. I am fine with that as long as it is applied to ALL posts and not subjectively targeted by the powerful.
I have had 3 experiences with down votes.
My first experience was when I uploaded a rough draft by accident so my published post was just a jumbled mess with lots of mistakes. The post was just garbage and not refined so logically it would get downvoted if read.
My second experience of downvotes seems more personal and resentful. I posted something that really struck a nerve and they feel it's their way of letting me know. I understand that and it's ok people disagree with each other everyday and usually these encounters make us better people or develop a new way of thinking. By acknowledging others' thoughts and actions and speaking out, sometimes pushing down is needed to build courage, strength and stability. It is a testament to free speech.
I think if someone with a lot of power is interacting within these parameters then that type of downvote where it is personal should have a limit on how much it prevents others from earning hive power. So maybe 0 out personal down votes or put a cap on it?
The 3rd instance of being exposed to downvotes is when I made this postand it had over $100 and someone came along and downvoted it closer to 0 once it was trending so that it would no longer be trending.
This was a shock to me as I had no idea one could downvote that much. I think maybe put a % cap on down votes?
You used to have to pay for down votes with your voting power just like you have to up votes. They made down voting free thus I don't think they are interested in capping anything. Also they can game that simply by using multiple accounts to down vote.
So they purposely want the gatekeeping to continue. Its a censorship problem for sure. They are probably getting investors that don't want "conspiracy" chatter to ever be on the main trending topics.. looks like its going way of YouTube or wordpress.
Im still enjoying hive and as far as being downvoted over $100 on one post im still earning more than I ever did posting on Facebook so. Im still a huge supporter of this network.
Yep... I don't tend to be pissed off unless I see them down voting someone to ZERO so they can't earn anything. It also isn't me complaining about it being done to me because it isn't.
It is me being angry about what I observe being done to others.
It can be soul destroying especially when I showed my family the positive feedback I was getting and then next time I looked it was near $0 the let down was felt.
I was new to hive this year and just decided to put my main efforts into learning the network/platform as I was banned from all other social media platforms for speaking my mind about the "science" behind the defective gene injection.
Interesting. I have some delve from long ago. I suppose I should have done something with it, but I have done things more stupid than not being financially prudent. Thanks for the information.
Delve on hive has not been released yet.
There is a delv on ethereum I think that is different
There was a Delve on Steem I was gifted years ago.
Oh ok. Completely unrelated
Hmmm... I didn't think it'd been released yet.
Correct.
I think hes thinking of DELV on ethereun
