RE: Can Brazil Nuts Prevent Rapid Amazon Deforestation?

in ecoTrain4 years ago

I had the chance to stay on a brazil nut farm in Peru, not far from the border with Brazil.

It's amazing how the ecosystem fits right in with the trees, as you are right, you can't just plant a farm anywhere, as it probably wont fruit.

one thing good to note

It's actually illegal to cut down or burn a brazil nut tree in brazil. Farmers usually get around this by burning all around the tree, which will usually kill it anyway.

I think tourism can also help to save them

Where I went was possibly the first Brazil Nut farm that was also a tourist destination. they were just setting up their operation, but it was really educational and a great time for us, also because we were good friends with the guide and his girlfriend!

Thanks for the info,
would be interested to know more... you could maybe make a post and share your experience on our new community its brand new so we havent posted on their yet

I will try to remember to do that when I have some time!! We are making a Digital Nomad course, so when we go through the old photos for that , I will dig up the photos and then make a post!!

Sure would be nice to shine some light on the idea, thanks for the suggestion~~
