QOTW 10.7 - Active and Reactive

( EN / DE ) Let me start with a short story...

Mario stood at the window of his house, lost in thought. Even though his fair-trade espresso from the new plastic-free machine probably tasted as excellent as ever, he couldn't enjoy it today. This day was too important for him. If he couldn't win the new customer from overseas, then he really had serious problems on his hands. He said a fleeting goodbye to his wife and children, they had no idea of the impending bankruptcy. From his electric car, he took one last look at the house, the perfect front yard, the solar panels, the thermal windows. "Everything so perfect, the way the world should be," he thought as he headed out.

Susan, the young police officer was just taking her children to kindergarten. They happily hugged before their two disappeared into the colorful crowd of other children. She was thankful that she had found this good day care here, they cared for the children and they were also well encouraged, so that they should have it easier one day, than their mother had it. But she didn't want to complain, no, they were doing very well and a quiet day at work was in order for today. From the bus that would take her to her duty station, she waved to the crowd of children. "Everything so perfect, the way the world should be," she thought as the bus pulled away.

Markus grinned all over his face as he read the news. "Yes! Our chance, finally again!" he exclaimed as he hurriedly laced up his boots. He quickly finished his coffee and ran out into the street. His buddies would be there shortly to pick him up. He pulled himself to the back seat and took the phone once again to sent messages to the others: "Ey, the ecos are doing an unannounced action! Be at the meeting point on time and let's rough up the gang and show this state that it can't do what it wants with us anymore!" He pressed send. "Everything so perfect, the way the world should be," he thought as the car sped off.

Claire took another moment. She stood on her small balcony and did some breathing exercises. She had taken extra time off for this important day and was looking forward to finally make a statement that would shake up society and bring it more back to nature. For a green planet and an exhaust-free city! She packed her water bottle in her backpack and set off. From her bike, he took one last look at the old brick house on the quiet street with the mighty chestnut trees in front of it that were just starting to bloom. "Everything so perfect, the way the world should be," she thought as she pedaled the bike and rode off.

The next day...

The three old friends meet like every day in their favorite café, but today the mood was depressed. They had all read the news in the newspapers.

Activists had blocked one of the major access roads to the city center without prior notice to draw attention to their concerns. Clashes broke out between the angry motorists and extreme elements of the activists. One policewoman was so badly injured that she is now in a coma. The police then used more drastic means, many were injured and countless activists were arrested.

"So bad that something like this could happen! In our propper City! The poor children of the policewoman!"
"Yes, we probably need better laws to protect us from this!"
"And did you also hear about the young man who threw himself off the bridge to his own death in the traffic jam?"
"Yes, so tragic, so sad!"

"What were they demonstrating about?"
"I don't know, it must have been some kind of ecostuff?"

ECOTRAIN QOTW 10.7: ARE ACTIVISTS WHO INCONVENIENCE THE GENERAL PUBLIC JUSTIFIED?

From NLP we know the assumption that every person always does the best possible thing, as it seems right from his point of view at the moment. As crazy as it sounds, also the criminal chooses his best possible alternative in the respective situation.
Another would choose differently. Often what others do seems to us as if they would make it very easy for themselves, or also as if they would just make it very difficult for themselves. Nevertheless, it is a fact that we always develop our actions from the sum of all that we have learned, experienced and seen. A very simple law of nature.

Therefore it is difficult for us to understand and sometimes to accept people who think and act completely different than we would do it ourselves. It takes a lot of good will and empathy to empathize enough to, if not understand, at least to accept such behavior.

I personally believe that we need activists urgently. Of course, within the framework that no one is hurt and nothing is damaged, although I would almost question even the second mentioned.

Most of humanity is so comfortable and so caught up in the daily hamster wheel that we just don't really take the time to think and to try to change things. We are too lazy to look beyond our own nose.

Unfortunately, I think the number of people who are really committed to a cause has declined dramatically since the 1980s. What happened to the punks, the mods, the rebels? Where are the musicians and artists gone, who critically shout out loud their truth?

Instead of the usual environmental and pandemic issues, I would like to mention one that has largely been forgotten:

The transports of nuclear waste in Germany via the railroad line to the socalled Gorleben interim storage facility. Since still no final repository has been found, this is a place where all the radioactively contaminated waste is temporarily stored.

I can still remember very well, in the past there were regular huge protest actions, activists had chained themselves to the railroad tracks to prevent the transport. There were countless newspaper reports about it, which had something very good: they at least brought the issue to the attention of the rest of the population.

Today? Most of the time, the transports are very quiet and demonstrations are banned from the outset wherever possible! And this in a country where free speech and demonstrations are allowed.

Now one can argue whether a nuclear phase-out is possible or not ;-) I as an Austrian (Austria declined nuclear energy long time ago) am pseudo well out, no of course not, of course it also concerns me.

But the point is, these protests have been going on for decades and most people pretty much don't care. They don't care that you still don't know where to put this highly radioactive waste. And if one would have taken these activists seriously and supported them, then one could have found a solution in 30 years to become independent of nuclear power. But nobody was interested!

You see, I don't see that activists have much of a chance to change anything at all about the structures of their society. But at least there is someone who points out in a more or less drastic way something that may well be rethought.

And thus we passive sheep are at the turn! We, who are hindered perhaps sometime by an activist in our everyday life. We are allowed to give the others the time they need for their action. We are allowed to ask, what exactly do they want and why? We are allowed to take ourselves by the nose and ask the question, are they perhaps right? What am I contributing to this problem?

And even if you now come to the conclusion, okay, I don't agree with them, I see it differently, you should still have the magnanimity to accept the other and be glad that people in our latitudes are allowed to go to the barricades at all.

My conclusion from my thoughts during this week on this very challenging Question of the Week from the EcoTrain community:

We need activists! We need people who denounce grievances. In my opinion, the younger generations are far too adapted, far too drilled into being well-behaved citizens and consumers.

We need those who rebel, cross borders, break chains! Where would humanity be if everyone had always just been silent sheep?

Midnight Oil - The River Runs Red

DEUTSCH / GERMAN

Aktiv - Reaktiv

„Ja, so tragisch, so traurig!“

No, we can’t be “silent sheep”, but we do need to take care not to do irreparable damage. Your point is well made! Nice fiction piece, too (very emotive). Excellent writing, I really enjoyed your unique approach.

The story at the beginning got me all confused. I was reading with rapt attention only to find out you were talking about activists.

I personally believe that we need activists urgently. Of course, within the framework that no one is hurt and nothing is damaged.

I share the same view with you but it's safe to say there is no protest without any form of damage anymore. The time of peaceful protests are over.

Ohne Protest funktioniert keine Demokratie.

I was trying to make sense of the short story only to read the next paragraph, a different article. I guess you used the story to catch our attention and if that was your intention, well you got me there.

Yes, we need activists but will any change come out of it? Those in power will keep doing what they want and will use their power to shut the activists up but we are hopeful that things will change.

We need those who rebel, cross borders, break chains!

That we do! I still believe that we should seek look inside and make all the necessary changes in our own lives first, be a mirror unto society, lead by example, and find the right voice with which to speak out against issues. Make sure that we are moving the conversation forward constructively to pull more people onside and increase the level of movement for good causes. Personally, I don't mind expressions of activism that cause inconvenience if it makes positive inroads... but some campaigns are just silly and unnecessarily cause immediate risk to lives. A balance should be sought. I came upon your post in Dreemport this evening.!PIZZA !ALIVE
