Building our Tiny House

in ecoTrain3 months ago

I say this often : it has been a while since I shared an update on our DIY build. I assure you that we've been working daily. There just isn't often big news to discuss when working as a two-person team on such a long term project. Most days I collect a few wheelbarrows of sand or rocks, and that is hardly exciting news.

Finally, I have something significant to share. After weeks of prep work and days of pouring/polishing we finished the floor of our two-room tiny house!!

And just like every other process, we made this floor very much our way, with minimal use of machinery. In fact, we mixed all the cement ourselves ( with some help from a big strong guy).

The preparation took days, weeks, maybe even an entire month. My man, Jona, did all of the calculations, measuring & leveling while I focused on gathering the materials for the floor from the creek. We needed lots of rocks to level up the floor.

Then, we needed plenty of sand, which - alongside the cement - we got delivered. Since we do not have a driveway, I had to bring up each wheelbarrow's worth of sand from the road.

And now, here it is! A colorful cement floor, a huge milestone for our DIY tiny house.

And even though it is made of cement & a few industrialized products (which might seem an odd choice for an earthen home) I am happy.

No one said you had to go 100% conventional OR 100% organic. We are walking the middle path and creating a modern, earthen home.

The Middle path is always a good choice. It's looking fantastic. Cement can look very natural too. I love it.

Thank you so much for saying so! A few friends of mine have done natural floors but, they require a lot of maintenance over the years and I am not sure I am ready for that kind of commitment right now. Maybe when we have more time and are working on a future bedroom.

It looks so good. I almost thought the floor had been tiled. Wow. I’ve never seen Cement floors look this good. Great job to you both.

Thank you so much!! I forgot to mention that the floor was wet in the picture so, it looks extra shiny. But we may actually paint it with a shiny material in a couple of weeks for extra protection and beauty.

Thats amazing. Is this in Argentina?

thank you! and yes, in Argentina!

Wow!
It feels so good when you build your own home!
All the work is exhausting, but so rewarding!
Congrats!

yes totally exhausting but, I know it will be worth all the effort when we are living there and not suffering from the cold winters like we do where we currently live.

So be it!
In the meantime, enjoy the unique process!
