When I saw this @ecotrain's question, I thought from where should I start?
Did you hear the name of Dhaka- the capital of Bangladesh? I don't know but I'm guessing you heard about it as a city of pollution or something related to climate change. Yes, this city is dying.
If I talk about sound, air, and water pollution in my area then it would not be enough in one post.
Banasree Lake, Dhaka- Bangladesh. Location
That's why I said at the beginning, where should I start? Because there are so many things that need to take care of. But if I talk specifically about the area I live in, I have to say I live in a better place than the rest of the city because it's a residential and well-maintained area.
But as you can understand, my side of the story is not the wholesome scenario of my city. Anyway, let's move on talking about what action need take in my local area.
This is how my locality looks like. There's a lake linked with this area and a lot of trees. I would say, the waste management and other social services are mostly good here. But some other common problems are enough to bother our everyday life.
Too many highrises.
This is a residential area but there's no public park or any other refreshment area for the locals. Only a privately owned park but that is too small and so usually gets too crowded. It would be great if we could reduce the number of highrises as this totally blocks our view. But I know that would never be possible.
Air and Noise pollution
Smog is a real thing in my city. Though comparatively, this area's air is less polluted as traffic is restricted here. But still, it needs to take care of. Also, there's a bypass road just near my house. Every single minute hundreds of vehicles enter the city using that road. It creates huge noise pollution during pick hours.
Using alternative roads, limiting traffic, enforce to following traffic rules can improve this situation.
Water pollution
This is the most adverse thing. People tend to dump waste directly on the lake, not the commoners but the shop owner of the market near the lake. The water stinks and from time to time it gets so worse that we can't even breath while talking a walk near the lake.
Dredging, proper waste management, public awareness needed to be improved.
Another common thing is the unmanageable mosquito problem. Also because of the lake, it gets worse.
A few days ago, I wrote about my locality in another post. You can check this post too to more about my locality.
The community leaders are trying to find better solutions. But everything is linked up with city corporations. And because of bureaucracy and corruption, it's way more difficult than we think to take any measurable action.
To be honest I'm not very hopeful about if we could make things better. But let's hope for the best.
