We’ve recently moved to a house with a garden and we are loving it!
I have been looking forward to having a garden for so long now and I’m wanting to make the most of it! As it’s winter here, there isn’t any planting to do but I’m wanting to put in a few things that will set us up for spring.
The first thing is a compost bin!
Up until now, we’ve been throwing all our food waste in the bin. Not great for the environment. However it is all about to change.
We actually set up the bin a while ago but then we had a windy evening that blew it around the garden. So this time we’re setting it up better!
So that it can’t be blown over so easily, we packed soil around the base around the inside and outside.
It shouldn’t move around now.
If you’re wondering about the black plastic around the front. It’s a second hand bin and the door had broken so my father-in-law fitted this beautiful piece of plastic to stop the compost falling out before it’s ready.
The first thing to go in is some leaves from around the garden. I’ve left most leaves in the borders to rot down but I’ve raked the leaves from the lawn to stop them killing off the grass.
These beauties are some pealings from the kitchen. The jar is from when we first set up the bin, so they have already started to rot down. The bowl is from Christmas dinner!
Look at all those sprout peals! 👀
There was a lot of liquid in the jar and it smelled very fermented, very much like wine. But much more vinegary!
In it goes!
Look at it all in there.
So we had a big clear out of the fridge and found some questionable onions and garlics that were not looking their best at all! Not for eating. Our old kitchen cupboard door worked well for a chopping board!
All in and our set up compost bin is ready.
I’m looking forward to all our kitchen waste going in there instead of the bin. Less to landfill.
I’m looking forward to seeing more garden pictures!!!
Thank you. Yeah I’ll post more are we do some more to the garden. I’m wanting to grow fruits and veggies so there will be lots of change to happen.
Yeah that’d be good to see, I’m assuming most of the sowing happens spring/summer time?
Yeah most seeds say to sew indoors from March really.
Nicely posted boss
