Respect is Earned

Respect is suppose to be given and received by all, irrespective of age, gender or color. There are tons of people who would disrespect other people and expect to be respected, probably because they are older, richer or influential. It doesn't work that way.

In a society where there is always power and class tussle, respect is one-sided as the "lesser" person is expected to adore, and worship the person that is perceived as superior. When you meet your employer on the walkway in the morning and you say "good morning", some arrogant ones will not reply because you didn't bow as low as possible or tremble as you sight them. They'd feel it is disrespectful to just say "good morning" without letting your whole countenance show that you are greeting them.

There's another scenario that I have witnessed at the bus stop on a number of occasions. It is more like a tradition that older people, especially men, like to sit by the door in the taxi. They'd refuse to take the next available seat, which is often the middle seat, so they will stand outside the car till another passenger comes in to fill the vacant seat, then they follow suit. There are usually three passengers occupying the back seat in a typical Nigerian Taxi. One of those days, a lady refused the arrangements set up by the man. She politely told the man that passengers are supposed to take seats by turn and not someone trying to avoid a particular seat. The man's reaction was out of this world. He spoke to this lady like a kid and commanded her to sit or she should go somewhere else.

All other passengers were surprised at this man's behavior. First, he doesn't have the right to disrespect the lady in that manner because she is right. It is not his personal vehicle, therefore he can't boss people around. If you want to sit anywhere you like then get your own car. Isn't it? On the other hand, there are lot of insecurities in the country and one of the tactics used by armed robbers popularly called "one chance" in Nigeria is to make sure that their victim is seated where they would not have the chance to scream or raise alarm in a moving vehicle. The lady felt very disrespected and she had to wait for the next available taxi. Meanwhile, the man was not remorseful for his actions.

I feel that every one deserves equal right to respect regardless of class, gender, race etc. The world would be more better than it is now if people are a little nicer to each other. We do not have the ability to see what is happening in someone's mind, or what they have faced during the day, so a little form of niceness doesn't kill.

Respect is earned and not the other way around. If you want to be respected, you must also respect the people you encounter in your daily life even if they are strangers. It is alarming when someone complain bitterly about being disrespected, yet they just did the same to another person some hours or days back.

Sort:

Greeting someone in the morning and he refused to answer or greet you back is always very hurting, it is egoism attitude that causes it, but we must not look it that way because all Humans matters, irrespective of age, sex, color and tribe.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Greeting someone in the morning and he refused to answer or greet you back is always very hurting

A person can have a bad day as a result of this because you'd feel you are irrelevant for someone not to respond to your greetings.
