What is the first thing that comes to mind when I read the words "If not you, then who? If not now, then when?"
Many ideas flit around in my head, but they all converge in the same thought: "I am" or "I am who I am", words attributed to Jesus in the New Testament. And, although so much has been said about this and there is still so much to be said, I feel honored to have the opportunity to let the stream of my consciousness flow where these words lead me.
¿Qué es lo primero que me viene a la mente cuando leo las palabras "Si no es usted, entonces quién? ¿Si no es ahora, entonces cuando?"
Muchas ideas revolotean en mi cabeza, pero todas convergen en un mismo pensamiento: "Yo soy" o "Yo soy el que soy", palabras atribuidas a Jesús en el Nuevo Testamento. Y, aunque sobre sobre esto, se ha dicho tanto y todavía hay tanto por decir; que me siento honrada de tener la oportunidad de dejar fluir la corriente de mi conciencia hacia donde estas palabras me lleven.
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
The phrase: "you yourself must be the change you want to see in the world" by Mahatma Gandhi, for me, illustrates very well the spirit of this QOTW proposed by @ecotrain: "If not you, then who? If not now, then when?"

La frase: "tú mismo debes ser el cambio que quieres ver en el mundo" de Mahatma Gandhi, para mí, ilustra muy bien el espíritu de este QOTW propuesto por @ecotrain: "Si no es usted, entonces quién? ¿Si no es ahora, entonces cuando?"
The story behind this phrase: "You must be the change you want to see in the world" is very revealing and honest at the same time. It is told that "among hundreds of people who were once waiting to speak to Mahatma Gandhi, there was a mother and her son waiting to be addressed by him. When it was their turn, the woman asked Gandhi to explain to her son why consuming sugar was harmful. But, Gandhi only asked her to come back in two weeks. Obviously, she wondered why such a strange request, because the child was already there, but she complied anyway. In two weeks he returned, and after a couple of hours, he was able to approach Gandhi, once again. Hearing the lady's request again, Gandhi immediately talked to the boy, who agreed to eliminate that habit of eating sweets. After thanking Gandhi for his wise words, the mother asked him why he had made them come back instead of offering help the first time. Gandhi replies, "When you visited me two weeks ago I was also eating sweets and sugar." He explained that he could not talk to her or teach her son how not to eat sugar if he himself had not followed that path. "Any change you want to see in your society has to start with you."
La historia detrás de esta frase: "Tú debes ser el cambio que quieres ver en el mundo" es muy reveladora y honesta, al mismo tiempo. Cuentan que "entre cientos de personas que una vez estaban esperando hablar con Mahatma Gandhi, había una madre y su hijo esperando a ser atendidos por él. Cuando llegó su turno, la mujer le pidió a Gandhi que le explicara a su hijo porqué consumir azúcar era dañino. Pero, Gandhi sólo le pidió regresar en dos semanas. Obviamente, se preguntó el por qué de tan extraña petición, porque el niño ya estaba ahí, pero obedeció de todos modos. En dos semanas regresó, y después de un par de horas pudo acercarse a Gandhi, una vez más. Volviendo a escuchar la petición de la señora, Gandhi habló inmediatamente con el niño, quien accedió a eliminar ese hábito de comer dulces. Después de agradecer a Gandhi por sus sabias palabras, la madre le preguntó porque los había hecho regresar en vez de ofrecer la ayuda la primera vez. Gandhi responde: “Cuando me visitaron hace dos semanas yo también estaba comiendo dulces y azúcar.” Le explicó que él no podía hablarle o enseñarle a su hijo cómo no comer azúcar, si él mismo no había seguido ese camino. Cualquier cambio que quieras ver en tu sociedad tiene que empezar contigo."
According to this premise, which seems to me to be very authoritative, the great changes required to improve life on the planet must begin with us. I imagine that it would not have been a problem for Gandhi to give a speech to a child to convince him of the harm that sugary products could cause to the organism, but his morals did not allow him to do so. And, so I think that many of the ills of our society have to do with the scarcity of moral principles.
Según esta premisa, que me parece muy autorizada, los grandes cambios necesarios para mejorar la vida en el planeta deben empezar por nosotros. Imagino que para Gandhi no hubiera sido un problema dar un discurso a un niño para convencerle del daño que los productos azucarados podían causar al organismo, pero su moral no se lo permitió. Y por eso creo que muchos de los males de nuestra sociedad tienen que ver con la escasez de principios morales.
"Between being and not being, I am."
This expression derives from Shakespeare's famous line "To be or not to be, that is the question" in the play Hamlet. But, to be and not to be in practice has to do with the doubt that consciously or unconsciously assails human beings when faced with important decisions to be taken... Those who do not decide, those who do not move and do not take a step forward, pass into a kind of NOT BEING, instead, BEING is active, decisions are made, responsibilities are assumed, it is the great leap of faith of those who trust, of those who dare, of those who act.
"Entre ser y no ser, yo soy"
*Esta expresión deriva de la famosa frase "Ser o no ser, he ahí la cuestión" de Shakespeare en la obra Hamlet. Pero, ser y no ser en la práctica tiene que ver con la duda que asalta consciente o inconscientemente a los seres humanos frente a decisiones importantes que hay que tomar….los que no se deciden, los que no se mueven y no dan un paso adelante, pasan a una especie de NO SER, en cambio SER es activo, se toman decisiones, se asumen responsabilidades, es el gran salto de fe de los que confían, de los que se atreven, de los que actúan.
Faith generates power and power, action: If I believe, I can. And, that reality embodied in thought is what gives the power to act, even if they are things that in other times we did not dare to do or thought were impossible to do.
La fe genera poder y el poder, acción: Si creo, puedo. Y, esa realidad plasmada desde el pensamiento es lo que le da poder a la acción, aunque sean cosas que en otros tiempos no nos atrevíamos a hacer o pensamos que eran imposibles de realizar.
"I am only one, but I am one"
It is so true that it is false morality to pretend that we do not have a share of responsibility in the status quo and in how the few or many actions that have been taken in favor of life have turned out. If each person takes responsibility for what corresponds to him or her and a little more, the history of humanity would have a kinder face.
"Yo soy sólo uno, pero yo soy uno"
Es tan cierto que resulta ser falsa moral pretender que no tenemos una cuota de responsabilidad en el statu quo y en cómo han ido resultando las pocas o muchas acciones que se hayan puesto en marcha en favor de la vida. Si cada persona se hace cargo de lo que le corresponde y un poquito más, la historia de la humanidad tendría un cáriz más amable.
If we worried less and cared more, another rooster would crow. Because every grain of sand counts on the beach of life.
Si tan sólo nos ocupáramos más y nos preocupáramos menos, otro gallo cantaría. Porque cada grano de arena cuenta en la playa de la vida.

"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I should do and, with the help of God, I will do."
