The Value of Culture in Raising Our Children

Culture is one of the most important thing that shape how we raise our children. Every country have their own way of doing things, and it is from there that children learn respect, manners and how to live right. When I look at places like Korea, Nigeria and Europe, I see how culture play big role in the way children grow and behave.

In Korea, culture is very strong. Children are taught from small to respect elders, bow when greeting, and always listen to their parents and teachers. Family bond is also very important there. Even when children grow up and they start working on their own, they still need the support their parents and visit them often. The way they respect tradition and family values is something I really admire.

In Nigeria too, the serious fact is that culture is what keep many homes together. We are raised to greet elders properly, to respect our parents, and to share whatever we have with others. In most Nigerian homes it not right for children to talk back at elders and to always help elders with the chores around the house. Even though modern life is changing things small small, we still value community and togetherness. When someone in the family is in need, others come to support. That spirit of “we are one” is deep in our culture.

Europe on the other hand, have a more independent way of raising children. They teach their kids to express themselves, to ask questions and to make decisions early. It’s a good thing too, because it help children to think for themselves and become responsible. But sometimes, that freedom can make some children forget respect or how to value family time.

When I look at all these places, I see that no culture is perfect, but each one have something good to offer. From Korea we can learn respect and discipline, from Nigeria we can learn community love and family bond, and from Europe we can learn confidence and independence.

At the end, what really matter is balance. Raising children with both love and discipline, teaching them to respect people and still be free to speak their mind that’s the real beauty of culture.
