So many times in life I use to give it a thought by sitting down and just ask myself this simple but heavy question: what exactly is life without money? Because no matter how we try to pretend, money is one of the strongest things shaping our lives. Growing up, my parents always told me, “Money is not everything, but without it, many things will disturb you.” Back then I didn’t really understand, but now adulthood is teaching me that lesson with full force.
Life without money feels like carrying a load that never want to drop. Even small things become big stress. You wake up thinking of transport fare, food, bills, house rent, school fees, even small enjoyment like buying cold drink becomes something you calculate ten times. It’s not even about wanting luxury sometimes you just want to breathe small without worrying if your pocket will disgrace you.
In Nigeria especially, you can feel this reality strong. Everywhere you turn, something needs money. Light bill, food price going up, transport doubling, even pure water is trying to join the expensive gang. And the funny part is that people will still expect you to smile and “be strong,” even when your account is looking like empty classroom on Sunday.
But I’ve also realized life without money teaches you some deep lessons. You learn how to manage, how to prioritise, how to appreciate small things. You learn the meaning of contentment. You learn how to value people who stand by you when you don’t have anything. That one is important because when you have money, everybody will act like they love you. But when you don’t, you will see the real ones.
I remember my dad used to say, “Don’t fear poverty, fear being proud.” Meaning even when money is not plenty, your character should not scatter. And my mom always said something too: “A grateful heart attract blessings.” Those teachings help me not to lose myself when times are hard.
Truly, life without money is hard let’s not lie but it is not useless. There is still love, family, friendship, hope, God’s grace, and the dream of better days ahead. Money makes life easier, yes, but it is not what defines our worth. Some of the happiest moments in my life happened when my pocket was dry, but my heart was full.
At the end of the day, money is important, but life is more than money. And sometimes, remembering that alone can give you small peace in the middle of all the financial wahala.
