One thing I always believe in life is that helping people who don’t have is not a waste, it is a blessing. From small, I grow up seeing how life can be very hard for some people. Some children in my street don’t even wear shoe to school, some families don’t eat two times in a day. Anytime I see them, my heart always feel heavy.
There was a time in university, I had little money with me, just enough for my feeding. On my way to lecture, I meet one boy begging for food. I look at him and I remember my own days when I also struggle. I remove ₦200 from my pocket and give him. Honestly, that money was part of my lunch, but the smile that come to his face that day give me joy more than any food. From that moment, to myself I say that no matter how small I get, I will always share.
Helping the needy is not always about giving money. Sometimes it is about listening, encouraging or even guiding somebody who is lost. I remember another time when a girl in my fellowship was crying because she cannot pay her fees. I don’t have enough to give her, but I connect her with a friend that later support. That small act make her continue school. Till today she still call me to say thank you.
But the truth is that many people don’t care, they just pass by the poor as if they don’t exist. Some even insult them. I don’t judge, but I feel this world would be better if each person help small. You don’t need to be rich before you help. Even if na one plate of food or one old cloth, it can change somebody’s day.
Helping the needy also give peace of mind. Anytime I give, my heart feel light. It is like planting seed, tomorrow you don’t know where you yourself will need help.
So for me, the act of helping the needy and less privilege is not duty alone, it is humanity. It remind us that life is not about only me, but also about we.
