What is Guilermo Del Toro’s obsession with weird creatures? First Shape of water and now Frankenstein

Sort:

Pans Labyrinth, famously?

👆 I've also been around long enough to remember this.

well, even Wiki says that :)

His work has been characterized by a strong connection to fairy tales, gothicism and horror, often blending the genres, with an effort to infuse visual or poetic beauty in the grotesque

Yes and he is very good at that and it came together very well in “the shape of water” but with Frankenstein now, it is his second movie relying on a monster for an antagonist ;)

Oh.. to be honest, I don't know much of his works, that's why I checked on Wiki :D I've read a plot summary of "Shape of the water" and it doesn't look to me like the 'monster' (amphibian man) was an antagonist there? it felt like the main antagonist was one of the scientists

That’s true. But the amphibian man becomes vengeful at the end so maybe there’s no protagonists in Del Toro’s world ;) Similar plot with Frankenstein too.. if you are uninitiated to his movies I would highly recommend.

it is a bit of a fetish... i have to say
