This morning I made my longest bicycle ride of the year: 100 kilometers.

We came across this giant flood barrier.

Well done, that’s incredibly good. How did you feel after that? I’m going to do some cycling this week whilst my wife and I are off. Need to get gradually fitter again. In not great at the moment, feel sloppy.

Actually quite well. I've been building it up after my injury.
Getting fitter gives you more energy.
Go for it 💪🚴‍♂️

That's a very long ride, congratulations! And that flood barrier does look huge. Is it for a tide-flood, or for something coming from in land?

No, it's for a tide-flood.
This is how it looks when it is closed:

When we get a big storm, the 'arms' close.

That’s a fantastic piece of engineering! We’ve got the Thames barrier here which is very cool in itself and used from time to time

Wow that is huge. Haven't seen something like that before. Thanks for sharing, very impressive!!

After a serious flood in 1953 where 1.836 people died, the government invested a lot in protection against the sea. This is one of the structures of the 'deltawerken'. There are 12 more of these kind of protections.

OKay, finished watching, and boy am I impressed! That is so awesome! And the level of finding compromise - I wish we had that capacity these days in politics. Just impressive. Did you ever partake in the Headwind Competition?

I wish we had that capacity these days in politics.
This indeed!

Did you ever partake in the Headwind Competition?

I'd love to, but it's only announced very short before it starts because the wind needs to be exactly right (hard, but not too hard and from the right direction).

I thought so, if you don't live close by, it must be difficult to get there in time. Anyway, thank you so much for posting this, that was really interesting!

Will do, thank you! It always fascinantes me how such a "small" arm like the north sea can accumulate enough strength to do such destruction. Hamburg 1962 ist the trauma of northern Germany in that.

Oh wow, that's quite a lot, even on a bike. Congrats :)

No stops or breaks along the way?

A short break halfway.
But I'm quite trained 💪

Nice ride! 100km is a good ride.

What a nice ride

It's adventure time.

Flats or heels? Sorry, I mean flat lands or hills? ;)

The Netherlands, so flat...
Although, there was a small artificially created climb there 😂

Like twenty meters or so? ;)

19💪 😂

Wow, that's like biking up to the fifth floor or so :))

I've done rides with 1000+ meters of elevation last holiday in France, so 19 meters of elevation in 300 meters is nothing 😀
