They start out looking like little "pineapples" .. fleshy pine cones ... I don't suppose they are edible at that stage...
Euell Gibbons once said in a commercial I watched as a kid "Ever eat a pine cone? Many parts are edible". Not sure at what stage he was eating them. lol
