I agree with the theory, but in practice, the comedy communities here (like too many other communities) only seem to attract viewers when they're running a contest.

The arts attract consumers. Even a livestream of a rocket launch falls into that category as long as there's a host. Look what's happening. People dropping tips. And yes a comedy community as it stands now is more like a comedian convention. People need to build the audience.
I've built a small audience, and I'm pretty sure I'm bringing at least a couple dozen new eyeballs to 3Speak, but I haven't quite been able to convert that to new users yet. Hive keys are still a bit too complex for below-average Americans, it seems.
Plenty of obstacles. People worked hard developing all this stuff. Quite innovative. For some reason after all these years I still think there's more room for innovation. Plenty of tools around, still in the box.
Probably a good time to stop thinking about it.
