Cuando comienzas tu carrera de liderazgo es como subir al escenario en una noche de micrófono abierto. Los reflectores están sobre ti, el público guarda silencio y está a la expectativa. Tienes la atención momentánea de todos ellos, pero su admiración y respeto… todavía no. Tienes el micrófono, pero ellos aún no saben si tienes el talento.
Having a position is like stepping onto the stage on an open mic night.
The spotlight is on you, the audience falls silent and waits in anticipation.
You have everyone’s momentary attention—but their admiration and respect… not yet. You have the mic, but they still don’t know if you have the talent.
De la misma manera que tener el micrófono no garantiza una gran actuación, así sucede con los líderes que tienen el título. Ellos tienen que probar todavía que lo son. Si te han llamado a ocupar el puesto, te han dado un cargo y ahora estás al frente del proyecto, departamento o empresa… todavía tienes mucho que demostrar. Una de las preguntas que ronda en las mentes de todos aquellos a tu cargo seguramente es: ¿Sabrá lo que está haciendo?
Just like holding the mic doesn’t guarantee a great performance, the same thing happens with leaders who hold the title, but haven’t yet proven that they’re truly leaders. You’ve been called to step into the role, given a position, and now you’re leading the project, department, or company… but you still have a lot to prove. One of the questions likely circling in the minds of those under your leadership is: Does this person actually know what they’re doing?
La posición de liderazgo, según John Maxwell, no es más que eso: una posición. Tienes influencia sobre la gente solo por tu título, pero en este nivel aún no tienes su respeto. Quizá infundes miedo, porque el futuro del equipo está en tus manos. Pero el respeto que nace de la confianza… ese tiene que ser ganado.
According to John Maxwell, the first level of leadership is just that—a position. You may have influence because of your title, but at this stage, you haven’t earned people’s respect. Maybe there's fear—because the team’s future rests in your hands. But the kind of respect that’s born from trust… that has to be earned.

¿Cómo puedes ganarlo? Con carácter, actuando con integridad, dando lo mejor de ti —incluso cuando nadie te mira ni aplaude— y, sobre todo, conectando con los que tienes al lado. En un mundo donde la mayoría en su puesto de trabajo solo hace lo mínimo, lo que menos necesitamos son figuras glamorosas con títulos vacíos. En mi opinión, lo que se necesita son personas capaces, auténticas y humanas. Recuerda: ya te dieron el micrófono. Ahora todo depende de ti para definir tu liderazgo.
How do you earn it? Through character, by acting with integrity, by giving your best—even when no one’s watching or clapping—and most of all, by connecting with the people beside you. In a world where most people do the bare minimum at work, the last thing we need is more glamorous figures with empty titles. In my opinion, what we need are capable, authentic, and human leaders. Remember: you’ve been given the mic. Now it’s up to you to define your leadership.
