I guess it's just so that we don't overthink it and find other answers to it, just a simple and perhaps literal one. The other answers also fit though but not in the same sense as a staircase. The mood, the fever...they go up and down too and could be said to be moving in that sense if I may say so, in an abstract manner. But the staircase doesn't move literally, its just built to go up and down.
As for the number of words in the waves, can we read from you in any of the communities or in daily blog since they allow longer posts and more words? In my opinion, well-being doesn't come from a person, man or woman, a place, or friendship, etc. But I believe it comes from a state of mind determined by the only weapon we have on this earth, and that no one can ever take away from us.

Every human being, from birth, has a "secret weapon" called FREE WILL! This is the engine that drives us to make decisions (right or wrong).
Some human beings use their FREE WILL for good, others for evil.
Now, it's not clear what you're referring to specifically!
But from what I'm reading, I can guess, so I imagine two scenarios.
In the first case, the disappointment resolves with time; surely, over the course of your life, you'll meet better or more suitable people.
In the second case, the scenario tends to be dangerous. Many factors come into play, including gender-based violence. Especially in some nations and cultures, there's a tendency "OUT OF MERE IGNORANCE" to subjugate WOMEN. This is because, from childhood, they're raised in PATRIARCHAL environments!
I could talk about this for hours, but I'll definitely write articles and videos on these topics, especially in Africa, where there's a growing belief in "magical" rituals like voodoo, used to keep entire families in check.
The Nigerian mafia is having a field day with these things.
The women who leave from there (with strange promises), perhaps of jobs, etc., after paying a lot of money, once they arrive at their destination—obviously in the Western world, perhaps Europe—will be the new sex slaves, always managed by the Nigerian mafia, established in places under the control of local mafias.
The men, on the other hand, formerly the more ignorant, but now also those with degrees, etc., perhaps even those who were in fraternities, etc., come to Europe—you know what fantastic promises (fake, of course)—once they arrive, they'll do labor work for the Nigerian mafia. That means selling drugs, etc.

Or like the Crusaders (Catholicism), who in the name of the Church committed similar heinous acts. All this stems from simple HUMAN IGNORANCE, which repeats itself throughout history. It all depends on Free Will, as you can see. We just need to turn on the power of our brain and use our Free Will, directed towards GOOD! By distancing "toxic" people from our lives as much as possible.
If the situation is unmanageable, use the "capuozzo" method!
