Sunsetting old image server

in Ecency4 years ago (edited)

We have migrated to new image server since last 2 releases of both Surfer and Mobile in anticipation of sunsetting one of our image hosting servers. Some cleaning up and maintenance of servers was necessary to plan for future scalable solutions.

From 25th of March, 2020, images hosted on img.esteem.ws will be unavailable. We have migrated over from esteem.ws to esteem.app more than a year ago, it is about time to sunset old servers. Our current/new host img.esteem.app will continue to function and serve our users.

All your images from img.esteem.ws is still cached on steemitimages.com servers as well, it will likely continue to be served unless Steemit Inc. removes them.

We recommend you backup, download your images and move them into new host. Your images are accessible in your Gallery. You can find Gallery page with all your images both on Surfer and Mobile.

After server offline, you can only access them with: steemitimages.com/0x0/https://img.esteem.ws/imagelink.png

If you are using latest version of eSteem or joined recently, you don't need to take any actions, because latest versions already using new servers for hosting your images. We are also exploring more decentralized approach for image hosting. More on that later...

Steem on!

If y'all need an automated solution to backup your entire blog images, I just released a tool.

I have worked out a number of bugs and added functionality to prevent Deduplication of data using hash checks and symbolic links. I will be updating the latest soon but here is the existing repository.

Also, here is a video of my working on the previous version. More to come

@good-karma, I'll work on updating / debugging the code last night and maybe this is something you will want to offer your users to simplify backup

Commented from wrong account. Those sort of things happen before I have my coffee.. doh

Have you guys tried something like Storj? or is still way above the paygrade?

Sia, Storj, Ipfs all is on table, each has pros and cons, but we ultimately want best user experience... so in-depth testing should be done before real migration to those.

Sia Skynet. It's a new feature using nginx and a image pinning mechanism. I am looking into the prospect of an incentivized Skynet network using a host whitelist.

Right now the renter pays to host images. I imagined an architecture could be developed to incentive people to run esteem image Skynet nodes for ESTM.

The SiaCoin repo itself is on gitlab.

That combined with a nginx caching method could possibly make a very low cost alternatively be to centralized cloud image providers.

Completely agree with that path. Would be curious to see comparisons, if you are whiling to share that info.

I have used SIA lib very mildly... and I used the previous Storj version... not yet the new one that I am testing serving and wanting to test a private network for research reasons with where I work for. IPFS might have like you said other advantages but not at the scope I am looking for...

Nice to see new options being tested...

Well I guess change comes with some discomfort but then...

?? If someone looks at my old posts will they still contain my photos?

Yes, because it is cached!

OK... Thanks! 😘
