Para la mayoría de los niños los cuentos son una actividad de entretenimiento, diversión y distracción y muchos padres le han sumado el elemento creativo a esta actividad para lograr hacerlos más llamativos y amenos a los ojos de sus niños. El cuento, en definitiva, es un excelente aliado tanto para los niños como para los padres dentro de éste ámbito; sin embargo, como padres de niños con autismo necesitamos movernos un poco más adentro y pensarlo como una forma de transmitir conocimientos, enseñanzas que les permitan ubicarse mejor en su entorno al tiempo que les permita, dentro de sus posibilidades, construir su propio aprendizaje de una manera divertida.
Regularmente en casa, cuando queremos que los gemelos vean una realidad o que adquieran un nuevo aprendizaje, creamos una historia con la cual se lo presentamos; al final, después de preguntarles si les gusta el cuento, preguntamos también justo lo que con la historia pretendemos que aprendan. Algunos ejemplos de ello, son historias como: EL niño mentiroso, Atención, vamos a la calle!, La comida de Matías, entre muchos otros que hemos inventado cuando hemos querido que entiendan y sigan algunos patrones de comportamiento que les serán útiles en el desenvolvimiento dentro entorno tanto familiar como en su círculo de amistades.
Desde el punto de vista del leguaje el cuento les permite, a veces sin proponerselo, mejorar sus habilidades comunicativas. Tomando en cuenta el hecho de que a muchos de nuestros niños se les dificulta mantener una conversación fluida, el cuento contribuiría a enriquecer su vocabulario con palabras sencillas (pronunciación) y de fácil comprensión con las que podrían expresar lo que sienten y a nosotros nos ayudarían a entender lo que quieren comunicarnos. Por otro lado, si utilizamos ayuda visual estaríamos contribuyendo con su memoria visual.
Cuando decidamos leer cuentos a nuestros hijos, necesitaremos considerar el tiempo y el lugar indicados para ello. Es decir, no será el mejor momento cuando estemos apurados o cuando tengamos alguna preocupación que nos reste concentración, tampoco podremos hacerlo donde haya elementos distractores. Como ya sabemos, los niños con autismo, generalmente también tienen déficit de atención; por ende, necesitamos tomar las medidas para optimizar el tiempo que hayamos destinado para los Cuentos.
Otro elemento que puede convertirse es un excelente aliado, es lo que en casa hemos llamado el Auxiliar. Un juguete o muñeco que refuerce la historia, es decir, que a veces cumpla funciones de relator o protagonista del cuento, según sea el caso. Todo con el fin de mantener la atención de los niños en la historia y para añadirle emoción o relevancia a los personajes.
Es de mucha utilidad tanto contar cuentos a nuestros niños como el hecho de que ellos mismos los lean.

- Se refuerza su vocabulario con palabras, frases e ideas sencillas.
- Se incentiva su creatividad.
- Se pueden lograr respuestas lógicas dentro del contexto de la lectura.
- Se ejercita su memoria de corto plazo a la vez que van creando un banco de palabras en su memoria secundaria o de largo plazo.
- Se estimula su escucha y atención lo que conlleva a una mejor comunicación.
- Como padres, fortalecemos los vínculos emocionales con nuestros hijos e incrementamos el tiempo de calidad.

For most children, stories are an entertaining, fun and distracting activity and many parents have added the creative element to this activity to make them more appealing and enjoyable for their children. The story, in short, is an excellent ally both for children and parents in this field; however, as parents of children with autism, we need to move a bit further inside and think of it as a way of transmitting knowledge, teachings that allow them to place themselves better in their environment and at the same time allow them, within their possibilities, to build their own learning in an amusing way.
Regularly at home, when we want the twins to see a reality or to acquire a new learning, we create a story with which we present it to them; at the end, after asking them if they like the story, we also ask them exactly what we want them to learn with the story. Some examples of this are stories like: EL niño mentiroso, Atención, vamos a la calle!, La comida de Matías, among many others that we have invented when we wanted them to understand and follow some behavioural patterns that will be useful for them in their development within their family environment as well as in their circle of friends.
From the point of view of language, the story allows them, sometimes without intending it, to improve their communicative skills. Taking into account the fact that many of our children find it difficult to maintain a fluent conversation, the story would contribute to enrich their vocabulary with simple words (pronunciation) and easy to understand words with which they could express what they feel and help us to understand what they want to communicate. On the other hand, if we use visual aids we would be contributing to their visual memory.
When we decide to read stories to our children, we need to consider the right time and place for it. That is to say, it will not be the best time when we are in a hurry or when we are preoccupied with something that detracts from our concentration, nor will we be able to do it where there are distracting elements. As we already know, children with autism, generally also have attention deficit; therefore, we need to take measures to optimise the time we have destined for the stories.
Another element that can become an excellent ally is what we have called at home the Helper. A toy or doll that reinforces the story, that is to say, that sometimes acts as the narrator or protagonist of the story, as the case may be. All in order to keep the children's attention on the story and to add emotion or relevance to the characters.
It is very useful both to tell stories to our children and to have them read them themselves.
One of the main benefits is to create in them a genuine love of reading and books.
- Their vocabulary is reinforced with simple words, phrases and ideas.
- Their creativity is encouraged.
- They can achieve logical answers within the context of reading.
- Their short-term memory is exercised and at the same time they build up a word bank in their secondary or long-term memory.
- Their listening and attention is stimulated, which leads to better communication.
- As parents, we strengthen emotional bonds with our children and increase quality time.

Si, como normalmente los cuentos ya sean solo visuales (Imágenes sin letras) o escuchados, tienen un correlación de acciones, es decir, una cosa viene luego de otra o a consecuencia de. Por ejemplo: :(¿Por qué le crece la nariz a pinocho? porque dijo una mentira) Es una manera sencilla de que ellos vean la secuencia de los hechos y poco a poco desarrollen la lógica.
