One: Avarice

in Reflections2 years ago

I live in a different world now than the one into which I was born; time moves forward and progress occurs along the way. We want more, I think to the point of greed, and no matter how much we as individuals have it's never enough. Even when we have something that works it's not enough, we want the next model, the faster or smaller one, or just one of the same in another colour, and how much money is ever enough? Humanity says, there is never enough money.

We are controlled by it, gripped by avarice..as if a human being's wealth and possessions possess them, rather than the other way around.

I don't know when that happened, possibly it has always been that way and now it's simply on a sharp rise, but I can remember when having something that worked, adequately did the job or served its purpose, was enough and people were content.

In my novice opinion, the world is struggling financially; you might not be, but many are, and it's changing people's thoughts and habits; however I also see many people refusing to change their ways, neglecting to limit themselves, and I wonder what the eventual cost of that will be. Avarice has a tight embrace and it seems humans hold on just as tightly to it; Does it make them feel better, to have more I mean. Does it make them happier? Possibly, but the constant pursuit of material things only brings disappointment when a person realises there's something newer and better on the market and thy don't have it.

Happiness, in my opinion, should be found in other ways and yes, we need to have things, make and spend money, however lasting happiness and true contentment in life must come from elsewhere, or so I believe it to be.

I have selected seven words to talk about over seven posts, one a day starting today, this is word one.

Sort:

I like the idea of choosing 7 words and talking about them.

Greed, something that is growing too much, already existed a long time ago but there is a certain group of people who want more and more and don't even care about those around them.

Having money is necessary in today's world but it is not the only important thing, but advancement within is much more important.

I don't know if there are people who are not ready to see that or how they see this issue, but I see them as automatons after money.

I totally agree with your thoughts.

Thank you very much Becca, it's always a pleasure to read you!❤️

The idea came to me today and I got right to work with the first I plan to do one every two or three days; it should be fun.

The greed-situation is something I believe is getting worse and worse, other aspects of it also; people just don't know how to say no to themselves and the lure of instant gratification is too compelling. There will be a reckoning, maybe not in a biblical way as that probably sounds, however at some point there will be an accounting for those who do the wrong thing I guess.

It's just that life is a back and forth, we get what we give and it's real what you think is going to happen, will happen.

While money is important, because otherwise we wouldn't eat, inner fulfilment is much more.

I love the idea Becca, I love it!❤️

I think the desire to have more has always been there for some. But like you kind of imply, and I tend to agree with, it has spread across much of our cultures and through social structures.

My brother and his wife I know are not that way. They have adopted a minimalist lifestyle. Some of it out of necessity, but mostly out of want. In fact, they lived that lifestyle before it was a thing.

We are attempting to do the same as we grow older, but is rather difficult as we have grown accustomed to our creature comforts and "things".

I look forward to your future posts.

There's a lot to be said for living more simply and I try to do the same buy thinking carefully before I buy anything, and looking after what I have so it doesn't need replacing. Trimming down ca be difficult though, as you say, however once you get some momentum on it I think it might become easier.

Becca 🌷

Being more critical of buying habits is something else we are starting to do as well. We did a clean out a while back of a couple rooms and I am getting ready to hit my old office/man cave tomorrow. It ended up becoming a catch all again after we cleaned it out once before. It is a work in progress, much like myself.

It's a constant task I guess, one that we need to attend to all the time. I'm doing a little of it myself this weekend, sorting through and finding out what things I need and don't need, in the kitchen and pantry. It's amazing how things accumulate in those areas.

Becca 🌷

It is crazy what you can accumulate over time. My wife did our kitchen a few months ago before we had some work done to it. It was amazing how much stuff we had that we never used and were able to donate.

Is that a greenhouse? If yes, that looks like a very big one.

I think the constant want of people to upgrade their things is subconscious, innate, and is a good thing. In the history of mankind, we have always tried to improve everything. The invention of the wheel, steam engines to diesel, airplanes, etc. I think the speed by which we are inventing and improving stuff now is so much faster than before. Manual things get replaced with automation, and it can usually give people more time, which is more important.

But I do agree with you. The world seems to be heading into a recession after just recovering from a pandemic. I am still very careful about my finances, but I see a lot of people spending a lot of money needlessly. I can't really blame them though. During the pandemic, we were forced to stay in our homes and isolate ourselves. Now that things have gotten better, people are too eager to get back the time they lost during it. They want to go out and go on vacations. A lot of people were able to save money because of the work from home setups, or government handouts, and are splurging to make themselves feel better. I know it's not ideal, but I guess that's part of human nature.

It's a tropical habitat yes, a large one.

I agree, time is certainly important and I believe (due to AI and automation) people will have much more of it on their hands as they will not have jobs.

People are just people and I think many delude themselves about the state of play in the world, financially and emotionally, and that can lead to behaviours which will almost certainly have far-reaching implications for many. I live in a thriving country but it's happening here too, cost of living increases, rise in crime and decline of the family unit and human to human communication. It's very sad.

Simple and straightforward.

It is true that people live this way, wishing for what they don't have even when what they have perfectly solves their problem and their needs.
Fortunately, I do not suffer from this disease. 😄

;)

According to Becca, I am on the right track.

I think simplicity of life is to be valued, and I work towards simplifying it, and my thoughts, meaning I determine what is right for me and look for that without adding complications that don't provide the value.

How about you?

Becca 🌷

I have not managed to simplify everything as much as I would like, but I am actively working on it. I can tell you that I don't suffer for unnecessary material things.

;)

Material things are a requirement, however making them the most valued or important things, certainly prioritising them, acquiring them needlessly, isn't something I value either. I think you and I think in similar ways. It's sometimes difficult to simplify life, but a good place to start is with one's own thoughts and attitudes, the rest often follows.
