Life Work Balance - Is it a myth?

Last week my 2-year-old daughter was ill. Flu with a high temperature. She is now well again and the sunshine has returned. My first reflex should have been to drop everything to look after my daughter and take her to the doctor. That's what I did, but I had a guilty conscience towards my work. But why was that?

One of my "good" resolutions for 2024 is to look after myself and my family more and not my work. But why is that so difficult for me? I work in an environment where I can take time off relatively quickly and easily, adjust my working hours and have complete understanding from my colleagues and superiors. And yet something in my head says you have to work...

Why is that? With my setup, I should actually feel that I'm in good hands and be able to look after my family without any worries. After all, we're only talking about half a day here.

  • Is work more important to me than my children and family? Surely not.
  • Do I need the work? Absolutely.
  • Do I love my work? Yes, I do.
  • Am I a workaholic? I don't know.

That's why I ask myself whether the "life-work balance" that everyone is striving for is just an illusion? Is it even possible to balance private life and work when you know that one cannot function without the other? Or is that precisely why it is absolutely necessary?

Is it just me, or do you feel the same way? What do you think about that (in)famous "Work Life Balance"? I am very interested to know how you deal with such situations and what your experiences are. The question shouldn't really arise and yet it does?
