For Christmas, I bought my wife a vase. Super boring I suppose, but it is a Finnish brand my wife likes, and she has wanted one for years. The problem is that it is quite large and we don't really have anywhere to put it when there are no flowers in it, so the other day I put it on top of our wall cabinets in the kitchen. And while it looked minimalist chic there in my opinion, I also thought it might do better with something in it that could easily be removed. So for the first time in my life, I bought some fake flowers.
Lame? Tacky?
Probably. But since I can't afford to put fresh cut flowers in it every few days, this'll do for its storage state. In a month or so, it will have fresh peonies from the garden.

A decade or two ago there was a big push for the "fake it til you make it" movement, but I think that people who subscribed to it didn't really grasp the concept. I think for most, they saw the "fake it" part as lying to people about skills and then learning on the job. And while I think there is some leeway that can be given to that, I don't believe that is what is meant by faking it.
Instead, I think it is more about doing the things that are required of the role, until one is proficient at them. It isn't lying, it is active growth. This is related to what I have written about before regarding being the kind of person one wants to be, takes doing the things that kind of person does. The faking isn't in what one tells others or oneself, it is in the being the person, even though the skills are not there yet.
It is a position of vulnerability.
Do it until you can do it, even when others believe you can't or won't. It will come with failure while you are doing your best to fake being able to do something, so be prepared to wear failures, take responsibility for then, don't lie about it. And ask for some help occasionally too, as it supports the growth process.
I think the faking it is more about taking what is being attempted seriously enough, even though the skills aren't there. It is like starting to play tennis, where even though you suck and your opponent might suck too, you can put the effort in and facilitate learning, speeding up the improvement transition.
There is already too many fake people telling who they are, but behaving altogether differently. The internet is filled with liars, whose words are far larger than their experience. Perhaps what we would benefit from is where the effort we put into improvement is larger than what we broadcast verbally.
We do more than we say we do.
As said, their is some credence to stepping into a bigger shoe role, with small feet and especially these days, it night require some passing to get there. There is value in the "background grind" where the work is done without any eyes watching, so when needed to perform, it looks easy. Easiness is about being prepared, not about being lazy.
Lazy isn't easy, except in the moment.
It is easy to be lazy, but when things inevitably go wrong down the track, most of us blame the circumstances of the hard moment, without attributing the part we played in being unprepared, when we chose to be lazy instead. Fake it til you make it requires dedication to development, which means that it means being active, not lazy. It isn't a shortcut to success, it is a commitment to being relentless in growth.
There are a lot of fakers these days, and it has been made increasingly easy through digital mediums using AI supports and google searches. Online, people can pretend to be all kinds of things, even when they have no direct experience at all. It is pretty easy to spot them over multiple interactions, but so much of the platform conversation is one and done. But even so, I wonder what feeling they have when they look in the mirror and realise, they are only fake?
What are they making?

I think AI writing is the most hideous thing ever. People I used to follow for their wisdom on Facebook for example using AI to write their content now. I know it's their wisdom (eg I follow a suburban gardener) but the fact he uses AI now makes me unfollow him. It's lazy and inauthentic and doesn't help him learn to be a better writer, in fact, quite the opposite as he de-wires that part of his brain.
I have to say I'm not a fan of fake flowers. They look pretty in your vase but I'd rather the empty vase and its potential for holding the joy that's coming than fake. It'd just remind me about how much plastic there is in the world because people must have shit. Sometimes we should do without, to know what joy it is to have beautiful peonies when they arrive. I'd suggest something that is natural like dried seed pods or shapely branches with lichen or the cuttings of indoor plants... Anything but fake. I'd hate to walk into a room and say oh beautiful flowers and someone to say they're fake. Although they may lie of course. Sorry I sound so harsh and bitchy but you asked and this is my truth 🤣🤣🤣
And I don't think it is really "his wisdom" either. It becomes a process of easiest path to content. 99.9% of content put on the internet is shit that people have no idea about these days Nothing is personal.
I would too. Luckily, they are "up high" on the cupboards. I may still take them out, but I am letting them settle so I can have some experience with them :)
I need them to grow first. This is the eventual plan. But when it was sitting there on the top, it just looked like we didn't have space for it (which is true) :D
I have no issue with this. I don't care what others think of my home. It is my space. I don't think my wife has noticed them yet, despite going in and out of the kitchen several times. She is short, and they are up high. She might 86 them still.
Ha no don't take me wrong, I'd never actually really judge your space or hold it against you :P You have a lovely home and it's clear you care about have a beautiful space, which is fine by me. I love that she hasn't noticed! That's cute. Let me know what she says when she does notice!
It's always what makes you happy in your space. I wrote the comment above, got half way to work, and thought 'ah shit I hope Taraz doesn't take me the wrong way'.
At her height, it might be months.
I think that motto definitely embraces an aloofness that isn't really commendable or attractive. It's kind of like saying you have basically given up so nothing matters or is important.
And that "I am going to lie to you"
I believe self-observation is the first step towards betterment. But, of course, it is only possible through internal validation and curiosity. So maybe the mirror moment is nott the end of something. It is usually the first honest beginning. How naive of me to think this way; otherwise, the world - even I - is faking about something or a lot of things with or without realization. Moreover, what we need now, for AI and unskilled behavior, is the treament of the cause, rather than, the treatment of the symptoms.
Btw the vase is genuinely enormous, and fake flowers are not my thing. Well "fake flowers" are the best antidote to analyze fake it till you make it, because they will never be able to make it. No growth means only decorative. Same is the case with we humans :)
For sure. But I think that a lot of people look in the mirror and justify why they are right to do what they do.
I am glad you saw this :)
Fake flowers are not my thing either, but we have plenty of real plants and flowers too, so this is okay being so high and not requiring watering :)
I don't know a lot about that saying but that seems a lot more accurate.
Not, I am going to lie to you in the hope you will accept me ?
There's probably a bit of that too but it doesn't work out as well if you keep lying indefinitely right.
AI is getting so good, that to set up new systems I no longer read instructions, I just copy and paste them into Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot does everything for me flawlessly... No wonder my wife calls me lazy... I take every shortcut to get to the goal quicker.
Remember that the goal you are getting to, is not your goal.
Not all artificial flowers are inferior to real ones. Some can be true works of art. Flowers in a photograph are better than an empty vase, and they remind you of the summer to come.
The glass ones are art perhaps. Not sure about the plastic ones :)
Still, we have fresh pot plants throughout the house, and fresh orchids :)
Semi-precious stones with gold and silver really look better than plastic :)
Materials: green jade, black jade, white jade, obsidian, silver, gilding, gold.
We might underestimate the value of hard work behind the scenes. Growth comes from dedication, not just appearances 😉
We see so little of real behind the scenes these days, that the average person has no idea what hard work looks like.
It is true that laziness only result in making things going wrong,
People make decisions that can lead to corruption without them examining the outcome.
We are both the sum of our parts, and the sum of our behaviours.
It’s not about pretending something is real when it is not it’s about holding the space for what will eventually be real. The flowers will come later but for now you’re still honoring the intention behind the vase That doesn’t feel fake to me, it feels practical even a bit thoughtful

You could do pretty nice decoration with dried twigs or branches during the cold season, while fresh growth is nowhere to be found.
Or stones, sand, or moss...
Colorful socks every once in a while. But they better be clean. Or forget about the socks...
fake it till u make it..
i think 'fake' flowers are cool. i mean, why kill something just to look at it for a few days?
