One-Percenter High-Five

in Reflections • 2 months ago

It is official.

I'm a One-Percenter.

Not financially.

I got an SMS today that started off setting expectations.

No discounts, no offers.

And then followed up with:

Just a High-Five.

That was my reward.

It came from my gym, and I am in the top 1% most active members for the year to date. I don't know where in the upper echelons of people without a life a lay, but I have logged 143 workouts at an average of 5.5 a week in the last six months.

I am likely in the bottom 50% in regards to my fitness.

But, you'd think that for the price of a gym membership in Finland, they would do something a bit more impactful than an SMS. Perhaps a scratch and sniff sticker with the smell of the men's locker room. Or a choice of items from the lost and found box that people didn't even care enough about to realise it was missing.

Anything would be better.

And then, why the hell was it an SMS? They have a full app required to sign-in and sign-up for classes. Why not push something to that? I mean, I use it at least 5.5 times a week. Wouldn't make sense to offer something, a free or half-price month, a sports drink or protein bar.

A branded hat or towel.

As far as I am concerned, not knowing would have been better than being told as if it is something special and not getting anything for it.

Perhaps their goal is to convince me to visit less.

I also wonder if they send a message to those in the bottom 1% and if they get rewarded with something to entice them in. After all, people who go all the time are likely to continue being a member, those who don't are one thought away from ending their membership.

This would be par for the course.

So much is generally spent on the bottom of the demographic trying to change poor behaviours to better, whilst almost nothing is spent rewarding positive behaviours. Over ninety percent of healthcare in the US for instance is spent on chronic, largely preventable diseases and disorders, whilst less than five percent is spent on preventative healthcare. Most money is spent at the advance stages of disease, not on prevention or early detection and treatment. This is similar all over the world.

Reward the behaviour you want to see more of.

It is pretty basic psychology and I guess the governments and corporations are doing just that, because they want to see more of what makes profits, not health. They don't want people feeling good physically, mentally and emotionally, because well-rounded, healthy people consume less. It isn't in the best interest of their bottom line.

High five!!

It is unlikely I will ever be in the 1% of anything financial.

Sort:

It's like the cell phone companies where long time customers get nothing, but new customers get free phones and amazing package deals!

Yeah, it is super annoying. Reward good!

I think "all you have to do" (because stuff like this is so incredibly easy a toddler could do it 🙄) in this case is switch away (or start going through the motions) and suddenly they're doing everything in their power to convince you to stay including deals and switching you to cheaper plans which they could have done aeons ago but didn't want to.

Or maybe that last one is just a bank thing, I remember J trying to resolve a problem we were having with a bank (something to do with crypto exchanges) and the problem was completely unresolvable (it's just in their policy therefore there's literally absolutely nothing at all that can possibly be done) so we walked, and they tried to keep our business by offering to switch to some account which was otherwise doing the exact same thing as the account we were closing but with lower fees or something like that and J was like YOU COULD HAVE DONE THIS THE ENTIRE TIME NO I'M VERY DEFINITELY LEAVING.

It's ridiculous for sure! That just is a really bad look on their part!

How much is gym membership in Finland? I canceled mine as it was $17 a month lifetime locked in price at LA Fitness.

65€ a month

That is expensive!

Ah the shot you would have to do and person you would have to become to get to the top 1% of financial hoarding would be worth it. I don’t begrudge the grind for financial freedom but beyond that is beyond me.

I am sure promoting a culture of people who are dedicated to their physical routine is beneficial to client retention. You are more likely to return next month with your dues if you were active this month. Maybe even inspirational enough to bring someone else who will join you and become an Adonis.

Anyhow, keep crushing the physical activity because it helps in every other aspect of a happy life.

I don’t begrudge the grind for financial freedom but beyond that is beyond me.

I am not sure if it should be a grind though. It is only a grind because of the 0.1%

Maybe even inspirational enough to bring someone else who will join you and become an Adonis.

There is a guy at the gym who is now my "friend" on the app, and he compares our frequency!

Reward the behaviour you want to see more of.

I still need to do a better job at this. But I try to check if the people who comment on my posts are powering down all the time. If they are powering down often I am less likely to vote their comment and just leave a reply to their comment.

I'm a One-Percenter.

I wonder how much time and money it would take for me to be a One-Percenter of having the biggest stake in Hive...probably too much.

Depends how you calculate it. Based on everyone who has Hive now, you are already a one-percenter.

I am already in the club? that is cool to hear.

Kinda like the badges I get on Hive, or for beating the bot in wordle.

less than five percent is spent on preventative healthcare

Maybe if you leave vaccines out of the stats. Of course, we would overall be much healthier if we never had a single vaccine in our lives.

:D

I think it is including vaccines. Covid aside perhaps, since I am not sure what the fuck that was in terms of anything.

In Finland, the entry threshold for the wealthiest 1% of the population starts at $1.5 million. It is enough to accumulate 1.5 million HIVE tokens and wait for their price to rise to $1 :)

Will it rise to a dollar though?

We often underestimate the power of small steps, particularly due to others around us. I think they deserve recognition at least from ourself because they are the ones that keep us moving forward.

Recognition goes a long way toward building brand loyalty.

If I were in the management of that gym, I would reward such members (those who are in the 1%) with 1 hour of sports or relaxation massages per month.

It is known that we don't appreciate the good we have next to us as much as we should and we pay more attention to the unknown or the worse, trying to fix it (partner, employee, habit...).

There should be something for it - get people a bit more excited about consistency.

Congratulations on being in the top 1%! Though it really is ironic how modern systems treat active users.

You made a spot-on point about incentives. Whether it’s gyms sending a text instead of a free protein shake, or global healthcare systems spending billions treating preventable conditions rather than rewarding wellness, we constantly see a model that reacts to problems rather than encouraging good habits. A small tangible perk—even a discounted month—would go a long way in showing genuine appreciation for loyalty!

we constantly see a model that reacts to problems rather than encouraging good habits

Exactly. Most resources are spent on what was preventable or on those who won't use it well.

Yeah, we all want a kind of incentive or reward when you do outstanding things just like that gym has rightly acknowledged. I think they want you to keep at it and never get discouraged. Maybe they have something for you at the end of the year. It is never impossible you know. But it is good to see that you have been consistent.

I doubt there is something for it - but I will keep going as I go anyway :D

Congratulations on officially entering the elite
I think you should tell them, not for yourself, for the next people

I might tell them - or at least one of the trainers I am friends with.

I guess no discounts and no offers is good because it shows they're not being predatory XD

And perhaps a voucher system to give a free month or something for consistency would be both too difficult and cut too much into their infinitely more important bottom line.

There will be a slow grudging kicking and screaming handwringing pearl clutching someone think of our infinitely more important than anything else could ever hope to be profits the children eventual demographic shift as from the skimming I do of news headlines it seems that more people are kind of at least becoming somewhat aware of

Most money is spent at the advance stages of disease, not on prevention or early detection and treatment.

Congrats on being active enough. I think as we age staying active requires tht sustained effort not much required in younger days. But it's interesting 🙂

Yep, irritates me when companies do crap like that.

Yep, preventative care would save lots of time and money. It would lead to a better quality of life all around for all. But like you said, it doesn't add those big dollar signs.

!BBH congratulations!

Small rewards for consistency can motivate people to keep going.

That is what Hive is about - but do people appreciate it?
