Passing Immediacy

in Reflections • 3 months ago

We are having my wife's family here for burgers tomorrow afternoon, but the forecast says it is going to rain the entire day. We won't cancel since we don't really have many options - it just means that some sucker is going to be outside grilling the burger patties while it pours down.

I am obviously that sucker.

I don't mind, since I largely won't be talking with people anyway and am more for decoration than company. Not pretty decoration, more like souvenirs from a work trip of a father in the 1980s.

Cheap, chipped and out of style.

In the morning I will prepare the base for a pavlova also, which doesn't take too long to make but does take a while in the oven. It is about an hour and half or more of baking (as I make large ones), but then to stop it flattening too much, it requires cooling while the oven is cooling down, and that can take an hour or two. Since we don't need the oven for anything else, it doesn't matter. Normally at this time of year I would put both strawberries and blueberries on the top, Smallsteps just wants strawberries this time.

Fine by me!

The only thing that is a bit annoying about everyone coming for burgers, is that the time slot is the same time that the Hungarian F1 begins, which means that I will not get to watch it live. No, it isn't a big issue at all, but I do prefer to watch it live as there is something more exciting about it. I reckon while "live is life" in many respects, it is a pretty new phenomena that we can get hold of so much live content now from anywhere in the world and we have been spoiled by availability and on-demand streaming. It wasn't that long ago that information would pass by letters and it would be months before the "latest news" was heard.

Better times?

I think it might have been, because we wouldn't have been able to be so reactive. By the time news reached us, there was nothing immediate we could do except accept it as is. Now, we are bombarded with so much immediate information that we feel we both can't miss out, nor can we ignore it, no matter how useless it might be. Perhaps if we distanced ourselves from the immediacy of most of the information we receive, we'd be healthier mentally and emotionally.

I was saying to my wife just tonight how everyone is turning into selfish assholes because of the information they surround themselves with. All this scrolling in a bubble, all this polarised conversation that makes us feel for or against things that aren't actually in our locus of control, and of course, all the advertising telling us that "we deserve" something are just breeding more and more entitlement. When an advert says that "you deserve a break" or something similar - just remember that it is going to millions and millions of people - are all the "yous" deserving?

Fuck no.

So with the grass cut and about half the weeding done (I am just following orders) in preparation for my wife's family to arrive tomorrow for lunch - I think I deserve someone to do the grilling in the rain tomorrow. But I am not going to get it, so if I want a tasty burger, I am going to have to make it my damn self.

And that is okay by me.

Who knows - perhaps the sun will shine instead.

Had to laugh reading this post. My father-in-law is coming to stay for a few days today. We are grilling ribs tomorrow. We is me. Plan to smoke them. Set and forget. Easy stuff. Don't think we have rain in the forecast though. Hope you are able to stay dry. Grilling in the rain would suck.

Cooking ribs scare me. I have never tried to make them myself, but I really like them. At some point I am going to bite the bullet and give them a go - any tips?

I smoke them at around 250 degrees Fahrenheit for around 5 hours. Season day before let them sit. If you’re going to put BBQ sauce or another sauce on them wait until the last 30 minutes of the smoke to start applying every few minutes.

Immediacy has a way of demanding our attention, even when does not deserve it. I think that some of the best decisions come from looking beyond the moment and considering the longer term consequences.

Yeah, but I think that we are kind of designed to jump at the shadows, rather than slowing down and working out what is really there.

The harsh reality: we navigate through life (and platforms like Hive) as if we were on that treadmill – moving fast, consuming the constant ‘now’, but without ever really delving deeply into anything.

We are becoming temporary data processors, trading wisdom for instant gratification. For a couple of decades now, we’ve been living in ‘fleeting immediacy’. We urgently need that pause to refocus our attention before the present slips through our fingers.

Do you think the younger generations still have time to retrain their attention through a conscious, individual and collective effort, or has the biological conditioning of speed already won the day?

I did some weeding myself today, on the rooftop, and had the gardener do the same at the bakery. It's good work. I found some worms that I took out of the pots and threw them on the compost at the bakery. Hope they'll stick around and start multiplying there.

I miss grilling burgers with my family. Though the experience is the same. It's me standing there, while the rest is talking. Depending on who comes, one does accompany me, though. Fun fact - although I totally forgot how to grill animal meat, I still seem to get it done better than the meat eaters. My vegan burgers are always perfect, of course - Beyond Meat makes it easy.

May the forecast be in your favor...you deserve a break

I enjoy cooking with barbecue
Of course, I don't like rainy weather very much

Quite a few things in this world surprises a caveman like me. Not even big things like internet or crypto. No I am talking mostly about smaller things. Like ability to fast forward/ slow down videos on youtube. It still amazes me that we can change the speed of something that we are not creating ourselves. In the past slave owners used whips and other punishments to make others work faster. Yet now we can just click a few buttons and receive content faster. And without any harm to other person. Sure that can't be done in all areas of life. But I still think that it is quite cool. In my cave times ability to stop time or make it go faster would be considered quite godlike. But in today's day and age it seems to be taken for granted...😛

I enjoyed this. Here I am, hoping the weather surprises you and those burgers gets grilled under sunshine 🌅

It's pretty funny but we gotta make do with it we have raining season here so .ost of the Time my in-laws stay on there place

Well that sucks, you have to make burgers for everyone but they are not even going to talk to you?!

Standing out in the pouring rain flipping burgers just to avoid small talk with the in-laws... sounds like an absolute win! 🌧️🍔 Just make sure to hold an umbrella over the patties; soggy burgers are the real tragedy here. Good luck, soldier!

Best of luck to you! That seems to always be the way it goes. I remember a year or two ago I was grilling wings and bratwurst for my inlaws on a couple different grills and a torrential downpour came through. We had to quick move the grills and hope that they didn't get too cold. It was quite stressful!

So did the sun shine?

Texts! I feel we I am expected to respond almost immediately. This is why I have a landline. Call my landline, leave me a voice mail, and I will get back to you if and when I feel the need to. Like those better times of yore.
