Step Lightly

in Reflections2 months ago

I feel like I haven't been out int he garden enough of late, so today I had some "alone time" and went out to finish the homework the electrician had left for me. It wasn't much really, but it did take a bit of work. I started with the easiest task, which was to screw the caps on the stair lights on to hold them in place.

This was the first evening we have seen all the lights on.

After which, I dug in the cabling for the garden lights, for about the fourth or fifth time in a couple years. This time it was because we added a light that is attached to the decking by the garden stairs, which meant moving a couple lights in the chain into new locations. Then I measured, cut and screwed the last boards of the deck to close the gap the electrician used, and attached the outlet pole to the decking surface. I also did some prettying up of the bin storage area with some left over river stones, and after the delivery arrived, rebuilt part of the hanging chair I bought for my wife.

It was an easy day, but I got a lot done.

I don't know how well you can see it in the image above on the right, but the thing that makes the house look like it is crying, is actually a ladder. The painters asked us if we wanted to remove it and add a proper ladder (for fire safety), but I said hell no, because that one is cool, so they painted it in the same dark grey as the window frames. I might think different if I ever have to climb down it one day.

I might just choose to burn instead.

But now, all that we have left to really finish on the structural part of the deck is the top of the privacy screen, as we are still waiting on a piece of wood. My wife called and they said that the reason they don't have it yet, is because not enough orders have come in to fill a delivery from the mill it comes from. If we want it straight away, we have to pay 90€ transport, for a 60€ piece of wood.

My wife will not pay out of principal.

After all the wood we have bought and what we paid for it, I understand her position. I think the least they could do is offer to half the transport costs with us, but I think they really should just wear the value, especially since the current plan is to build the next part of the deck next summer, which is a little larger. They will get their money back. They aren't the only supplier in the area.

Still, overall I am pretty happy how this project has turned out so far and even though the weather is cooling rapidly, I am still hoping to enjoy some evenings out there, grilling some meat, drinking some wine, and toasting some marshmallows around a little fire pit.

I am going to have nothing to do in the winter.

Nice job on the garden there chief

I am not too impressed by much I do, but this has come up pretty well. The whole garden looks, like a garden :D

God I’ve been 5 years now grind to do something with mine . Need to get my arse in gear .

Trying to

There should be a Tryndr app to connect with other people who procrastinate.

I was never a garden person earlier, but it has been really enjoyable to get into it.

Your wife must be really happy with your helping around the house, and I must say your home looks really nice. It always feels good fixing things at home by yourself instead of having to hire others to do it.

I am someone who believes that we should all pull our own weight. Unfortunately, I weigh over twice as much as her.

I agree. I am learning where I can and doing what I can. I am not great at it, but it is rewarding.

The lights look absolutely magical in the evening. All that hard work is really paying off. Enjoy those well-deserved evenings of grilling and marshmallows. And te image of the house 'crying' because of the ladder is hilarious and unique. Btw that transport cost is insane :( Your wife is right to stand her ground on principle.
Good luck for the winter ❄⛄

My daughter is really looking forward to it :)

Yes. But don't tell her I said she was right.

The supplier really should meet you halfway on the delivery, especially with the amount you’ve spent. I just hope you get to enjoy many good cozy nights by the fire pit before winter fully sets in it gets way colder

It looks like you really made the most of your day in the garden and got a lot of things ticked off the list. The lights and decking work are coming together nicely, and I can imagine how cosy it will be once you get to enjoy evenings outside with the fire pit. I agree with your wife on the wood issue that paying more for transport than the wood itself doesn’t make sense. Hopefully, the supplier sorts it out soon so the project can be fully complete.

Wow wow the structures in your garden now looks amazing, I love the lights, are so modern, well if you don't have so much left to do after the workers did their job I think you can sit and admiring the beautiful lights.

Its look so lovely and pretty nice. The lights look kind of a romantic scene and I love it.

Those lights really add something special, making the whole place feel welcoming. I agree with you about the delivery problem. It is only right for them to cover the shipping costs considering all the money you've put in.

The light that spreads from your house into the garden in the evening is like an invitation to a bright night. You can clearly be happy that the project you have been working on so far has been successful.

Electrical work should be done in a very orderly and safe manner. Keeping the light caps in one place is a very annoying task for me. An evening with all the lights on is a truly peaceful time. The hanging chair you bought for your wife is beautiful and she must have enjoyed rebuilding it. There is nothing more enjoyable than a barbecue with some alcohol when the weather is getting colder.

Your place looks beautiful!

The garden looks fantastic. It's simple and quite elegant. The lighting is also beautiful. It's perfect for a romantic dinner. The sex swing is also in a great location. In winter, you can now look out from inside for 6-7 months.

Beautiful evening lighting. May there be more warm days in September. Do you see stars in your area?

Your work is to be commended because the lighting, decking and small changes in the decor have brought the entire garden to life. Although the hassle of delivering the wood is annoying, I think your wife's position is reasonable. I think your project will be enjoyable in both winter and summer. Best wishes to you.

Deck looks lovely with all the stair lights :) Is it going to stay open like that or you going to put a cover over it?

I could be completely misjudging but I'm sure you'd be fine if you just jumped out the window and then safety rolled in event of a fire XD

I suppose that does require knowing how to collapse into a safety roll, maybe you should try out the cool looking ladder XD

We've wanted one of those egg chairs for a while, or a more outdoorsy "nest" variants that can hang from a tree, but J was violently opposed to spending anything at all on anything he didn't see as absolutely essential (which made homeschooling extremely difficult sometimes, he's much better about it now but that doesn't help in the slightest what we needed back then). The egg chair would require the patio to be bigger though and for that I'm going to have to wait til whenever we get around to doing our renos.

Does nothing at all grow in winter there? There's likely to be winter prep work for the following warm months that you could do and if nothing else probably a million tasks inside the house right XD
