When we talk about happiness, we immediately think of looking inside ourselves. Self-knowledge, the deepest inner “me,” things related to our psyche.
Of course, all of this is important. I am not saying that true happiness should not also be sought here. But we must also remember that life is lived in the real world. And it is lived in relation to the world. And in this relationship with the world, the world affects us all the time, and we affect the world all the time too...
We can easily, clearly, and almost immediately perceive the influence that the world has on us, every second.
But what happens in the world because of us, or because of our influence, good or bad, is often ignored by us. We are not interested in knowing. And if we are interested, sometimes we only want to see what we have done. That is, when we have taken action and see the response or reaction it has caused.
I started to pay close attention to the influence and relationship I have with the outside world. To the influence we have on the things around us, on the world. And I think that this aspect of life compensates for many of the hardships that life brings us, and that it “causes” us.
If you only record or remember the suffering that life has brought you or caused you, the final balance ends up being too cruel and biased.
It is also necessary to notice the drops of happiness. These drops, light and very fragile, bring us so much encouragement and are so precious. They are invaluable. They are so valuable that they wake us up the next day, beating our chests, getting dressed, and going into battle.
And we can ask ourselves the following question:
“What kind of life is worth living?”
And the answer may be very simple. Necessarily our own, and not someone else's. Necessarily with our own feelings, with our own insights, with our own values, in a reality and a world that is perceived by our mind. And that is the way it has to be. The chance of you having a life worth living increases to the extent that that same life is predominantly led by you... You are the driver. Do not allow yourself to be predominantly a slave to ready-made, preconceived formulas that promise us ease... but at a very high cost. A cost paid with our freedom and with the happiness that comes from that effort and that pure experience.
Be an active part in the pursuit of your happiness. It is not easy. We should not believe it if someone tries to sell us that idea. But it is certainly possible, for some periods of time, for life to bring us a sense of joy.
