A KLAPPER OF A CAKE

IMG_0380.JPG

Chocolate in various forms has been central to our family with back to back birthdays. To the delight of the BuckarooBabies this delicious chocolate cake came decorated with Pop flowers - That's their name. These unusual but bright pink pods are from the Klapperbos. The name Klapper is the Afrikaans word for cracker or a popping sound. Isn't that adorable? At the moment the Karoo is a show of these beautiful pink plants indigenous in our area.

We took a very early walk up the mountainside to justify a breakfast of cake! Because we have yet to fire up our Pizza Oven, this beauty was baked by a fellow health nut friend. She used my goats milk yoghurt, plenty of organic cacao and a fresh batch of peanut butter. Yup. Deeeeeeeelicious! More so because I didn't have to bake it!! But - watch this space - I will be doing my own interpretation of it.

The striking pink seeds and flowers of the Klapperbos - Nymania capensis - is known in English as the Chinese lantern. Rather silly if you consider it. Klapperbos is so much more perfect. At the moment the magnificent plants are a show across the Karoo. They are indigenous to our arid conditions however they do not survive transplanting as the roots can't handle the shock.

Summer is here. It is H.O.T. We took hats, water, enthusiastic children and about half a dozen cats. The hike is steep. But the views from the top are spectacular.

In over a decade here I have never seen such a show of colour and variety of wild flowers. Following the long drought it is wonderful to see how much of the natural vegetation survived.

The children gleefully ran from Klapperbos to Klapperbos picking and popping. They climbed the anthills and searched between the tiny wild flowers for little butterflies.

Not only has the veld sprung back to life but there is plenty evidence of wild animals. They were rather shy because of the whoops of the children and prowling cats.

However we did spot the fleeting escape of little antelope, Klip Springer. And the most unwanted barking baboons. They were probably eyeing our cake back home.

After all these years the beauty of our little piece of paradise still leaves me breathless. How it survived flood and then drought is through the miraculous Hand of the Most High. We are blessed to be here. We celebrate the life of a loved one but also more than that. We celebrate the people. The place. The wonder of living. May life always contain that delicious chocolate cake covered in Klapperbos.

I agree the Klapperbos is a better name. Sounds like a wonderful day!

Very clever and beautiful cake!
Look very yummy 😍

I wondered when I saw the thumbnail how a cake related to a walk so opened it eagerly
First off that looks a very nice cake
Great too see your walk and the flowers rugged but beautiful scenery

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Thank you. Yes it is very rugged. Quite wild and untamed looking compared to many other country scenes I see others posting about. But we love it. It is a hard life but it is a good life. Especially when there is cake around! I had a chuckle choosing that photo as the first one ....

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and for me beauty is everywhere if we open our eyes and appreciate it

Beautiful! The landscape and vegetation is so different where you live. Those ant hills are so big!

Indeed! We are truly blessed with our country home

Awe, the Klapperbos are beautiful on that very scrumptious looking cake. It has some of my favorite things in it, goat milk yogurt, fresh peanut butter, and organic cacao! Holy flavor overload! I bet it is a piece of fudgtopia!

And as I write this it is beginning to snow, so your hot hike looks absolutely amazing!

Fudgtopia is a good word!!
