MY CUP RUNNETH OVER

Imagine a long drought - loss of family farms, loss of livestock and crops - and then this!! For those of us who have survived we're now witnessing the miracle of the huge dam that waters the entire valley overflowing!! The sight has left not a dry eye in the valley. Life springs forth as the water floods its banks. The world is tranformed over night. The world is green, baby animals and birds are being born and those that can are returning to the farm houses. It is a joyous time.

Our quiet farm road is busier than normal with people coming to view the incredible sight.

IMG_0041 (3).JPG

In over a decade here I have never seen the dam so full. Is it not magnificent?

IMG_0057 (3).JPG

Standing overlooking the dam one can still hear the roar of the waterfalls in the faraway mountains. As the water rises and rises ....

IMG_0054 (2).JPG

With a slight wind and the setting sun the views over that massive body of water is something to behold. What a gift from Heaven!

IMG_0025 (4).JPG

There are two dirt roads leading to the dam. They are treacherous at the best of times - reached only by an adventurous 4x4.

IMG_0004 (4).JPG

Now one is flooded and only passable by boat!

IMG_0068 (3).JPG

The farmers who are not recovering from hangovers are opening their flood irrigation gates and hoping the channels hold the rush of water.

IMG_0003 (4).JPG

While we watch the water flooding we can see the clouds gathering in anticipation of more rain.

IMG_0069 (3).JPG

Water - and such a huge amount of it - in the semi desert is truly a miraculous sight to behold. How blessed we are!

IMG_0023 (2).JPG

Of course, our joy is tempered by sadness at the great losses endured. So, so many lives were lost or altered forever. The evidence remains in the dead trees and abandoned farmlands.

Thank you so much

Transformation is spectacular when the rains eventually arrive, hope no droughts like this last extended one for many years to come.

Total transformation! The before and after is hard to compare - if we hadn't lived through it

Living in one place for forty years one sees the drought damage, the flood damage and the good years in between, it is extreme!

Living where you do when the rains come sit near a dry stream and watch the flow start, it's amazing.

Oh wow - that is a massive body of water! May it hold for a long, long time and give life to the land you live on. I can't wait to see even greener photos 😀

The resurgence & resilience of Mother Earth is a true miracle. no? Big rain after a long drought is serious cause for celebration!!

Personally, I love the SMELL that comes after rain the most...! 😍

The smell after the rain is wonderful. Here it is something extra special as the cacti all over the mountainside bloom when it rains (they tell us before it rains). The flowers are the size of a plate! And their scent is the most unbelievable perfume

Wonderful! the drought down there has been incredible. I'm so happy for you

It is great that the precious holy water is back! Hopefully the balance will be found and you will not experience such drought again!

Greetings from the Garden Route. It has been wetter here too this season. I'm so happy to see that the rain has lifted your world from the drought.

It feels like we're now part of the Garden Route! The beauty of the veld blommetjies is quite spectacular

Having lived through a terrible drought myself, I know the joy of rain and water - even many years later, floods to me are miracles. We are lucky to live in an area where extreme flooding like in the tropics (which can kill) is not usual, so we relish full dams and lakes and reservoirs with unreserved joy. When the rains come we 'flood' to waterfalls and overflows from reservoirs for the spectacle. I can feel the joy in this post and know it as truth. thanks for sharing x

That’s amazing to see! It’s palpable the emotion in the post here, water is the most important thing in the world (hence why rich people like Gates are buying it up left and right..story for another day lol) and to see it flowing again after a difficult period is amazing! I have been fortunate enough in life to live somewhere that doesn’t have that bad of a drought concern but I know that regardless of where you are, it’s the most important resource!

Yes...he certainly is a subject for another day - or not at all. Probably one of the most discussed personalities but let's rather celebrate life giving water. As you say @cmplxty, water is most certainly the most essential resource. Homesteading in this semi-drought area had taught us that. However we appreciate it so much more following the drought

Pemandangan yang sangat penting dan indah bagi saya... terima kasih
