Two typical flowers in Cuban gardens are roses and the gerbera, better known as the African daisy. These two beautiful specimens belong to the garden of my work center. I would like to share with you some of the care that should be taken with these plants.

Dos flores típicas de los jardines cubanos son las rosas y la gerbera más conocida como margarita africana. Estos dos bellos ejemplares pertenecen al jardín de mi centro laboral. Me gustaría compartir con ustedes algunos de los cuidados que se deben tener con estas plantas.

Rose bushes are generally thorny shrubs and flowering plants whose flowers are called roses and there are around one hundred species. Its dimensions range between 2 to 5 meters; but some species reach 20 meters. Below I leave you some tips so that your roses are the queens of your gardens:

1. Cut wilted roses to encourage the growth of new ones.
2. Pruning should be done with sharp scissors and diagonally.
3. Plant rose bushes where they get the most light.
4. If you have more than one rose bush, do not plant them so close to each other.
5. Water abundantly but not so often.
6. Almost the entire plant should be pruned once a year.

Los rosales son arbustos generalmente espinosos yfloridos cuyas flores se denominan rosas y hay alrededor de cien especies. Sus dimensiones oscilan entre los 2 a 5 metros; pero algunas especies alcanzan los 20 metros. A continuación les dejo algunos consejos para que sus rosas sean las reinas de sus jardines:

1. Cortar las rosas marchitas para favorecer el crecimiento de nuevas.
2. La poda debe hacerse con tijera bien afilada y en diagonal.
3. Planta los rosales donde les de mayor cantidad de luz.
4. Si tienes más de un rosal no los plantes tan cerca entre sí.
5. Riega abundantemente pero no tan seguido.
6. Una vez al año se debe podar casi toda la planta.

The American daisy has more than 150 varieties and consists of a wide variety of colors: red, orange, yellow, pink or white. It is a herbaceous plant, whose roots can measure more than one meter. It comes from South Africa and is very resistant to almost all types of climate, although cold and humidity do not favor it much. Among the care that must be taken when growing it are the following:

1. If they are grown in pots, they should be tall, with drainage and placed in a sunny and cool place.
2. In spring and summer, water them frequently, and in autumn and winter only when the soil is dry.
3. If the plant is affected by pests, remove the diseased leaves and transplant it.

La margarita americana posee más de 150 variedades y consta de una ampliavariedad de colores: rojo, naranja, amarillo, rosa o blanco. Es una planta herbácea, cuyas raíces pueden llegar a medir más de un metro.Procede de Sudáfrica y es muy resistente a casi todo tipo declima aunque el frío y la humedad no la favorecen mucho. Entre los cuidados que se deben tener al cultivarla están los siguientes:

1. Si se cultivan en macetas estas deben ser altas, con drenaje y colocadas en un lugar soleado y fresco.
2. En primavera y verano riégalas frecuentemente, y en otoño e invierno solo cuando la tierra esté seca.
3. Si la planta está afectada por plagas retira las hojas enfermas y transplántala.
