Apart from being, due to its characteristics, an emblem of slowness and longevity, there are also those who observe in them a metaphor of life, understood from a merely instinctive sense, because when they feel in danger, they withdraw into themselves. Considered, within the rich symbolism of numerous ancient cultures, as a formidable pillar between the earth and the sky, leaving aside, for example, its importance within the beautiful myths of the great Polynesian navigators, the turtle, today and regarding the scope of many countries considered 'civilized', it also represents, unfortunately, the perfect paradigm of irresponsible affection.
This is based on the fact that unlike the vast majority of domestic animals that are usually adopted, accompanying many families in their particular life adventure, with turtles there seems to be an unusual tendency to abandonment, also constituting a symbol of that selfish irresponsibility, which unfortunately characterizes many human beings. So that no one feels offended or alluded to, I give as an example - and I do so with regret, not without shame - my own city, Madrid, to which must be added the irresponsible behavior of many citizens, who for years took as perfect , to get rid of those turtles that no longer caused them any empathy, the small interior gardens of the popular Atocha station, until the City Council, in view of the increasingly growing number of abandonment and the appalling overcrowding conditions to which poor animals were destined, they decided to take action on the matter, prohibiting, fining and trying to find them a more suitable home.
Due to its characteristics, a place that could be considered as perfect to partially solve the problem, was none other than the small artificial lake that offers coverage to the monumentality of the emblematic Crystal Palace, located in one of the most privileged areas of the Retiro Park, whose beauty, enjoys the visit and admiration of many visitors. But the problem persists and what at first seemed like an acceptable and worthy solution for the more or less happy survival of these unfortunate animals, now constitutes another added inconvenience, since the abandonment continues to happen and there are no predators that can maintain a correct balance, there is a risk, as is already the case in big cities with other animals, such as pigeons, of overpopulation, in the face of which sooner or later there is no choice but to take action than to any honest person and lover of animals. animals, it would deeply disgust.
It is very good to fill our mouths when we say that we love animals, but it would be much better if we learned that love towards other beings is shown with something more than words: with responsibility.
Aparte de ser, por sus características, todo un emblema de la lentitud y de la longevidad, hay también quienes observan en ellas una metáfora de la vida, entiéndase desde un sentido meramente instintivo, pues al sentirse en peligro, se repliegan en sí mismas. Considerada, dentro del rico simbolismo de numerosas culturas de la Antigüedad, como un formidable pilar entre la tierra y el cielo, dejando aparte, por ejemplo, su importancia dentro de los hermosos mitos de los grandes navegantes polinesios, la tortuga, en la actualidad y referente al ámbito de muchos países considerados ‘civilizados’, representa también, por desgracia, el paradigma perfecto del afecto irresponsable.
Esto tiene como base, que a diferencia de la gran mayoría de animales domésticos que suelen ser adoptados, acompañando a muchas familias en su particular aventura vital, con las tortugas parece existir una inusual tendencia al abandono, constituyendo, además, todo un símbolo de esa egoísta irresponsabilidad, que por desgracia, caracteriza a muchos seres humanos. Para que nadie se sienta ofendido o aludido, pongo como ejemplo -y lo hago con pesadumbre, no exenta de vergüenza- mi propia ciudad, Madrid, a la que hay que añadir el irresponsable comportamiento de muchos ciudadanos, que durante años tomaron como inclusa perfecta, para deshacerse de esas tortugas que ya no les causaba ninguna empatía, los pequeños jardines interiores de la popular estación de Atocha, hasta que el Ayuntamiento, en vista del número cada vez más creciente de abandono y las pésimas condiciones de hacinamiento a las que se veían destinados los pobres animales, decidieron tomar cartas en el asunto, prohibiendo, multando e intentando encontrarles un hogar más acorde.
Por sus características, un lugar que podría considerarse como perfecto para solucionar en parte el problema, no era otro que el pequeño lago artificial que ofrece cobertura a la monumentalidad del emblemático Palacio de Cristal, situado en una de las zonas más privilegiadas del Parque del Retiro, cuya belleza, goza de la visita y de la admiración de numerosos visitantes. Pero el problema persiste y lo que en un principio parecía una solución aceptable y digna para la supervivencia más o menos feliz de estos desafortunados animales, ahora constituye también otro inconveniente añadido, puesto que al seguir sucediéndose los abandonos y no tener depredadores que puedan mantener un correcto equilibrio, se corre el riesgo, como ocurre ya en las grandes ciudades con otros animales, como las palomas, de una superpoblación, frente a la que tarde o temprano no haya más remedio que tomar medidas que a cualquier persona honesta y amante de los animales, disgustaría profundamente.
Está muy bien llenarse la boca cuando decimos que amamos a los animales, pero estaría mucho mejor que aprendiéramos que el amor hacia otros seres, se demuestra con algo más que palabras: con responsabilidad.

You photographed the turtles it was great and really cool. in my place almost no more turtles.
Better that there isn't, because here people buy them as pets and when they get tired of them they abandon them.
