Okay, this time I will explain about the rice picking process from start to finish.

The first stage that must be considered includes the maturity of the rice on the stem, it is mandatory to pay attention, if the rice is ripe on the new stem we can pick it, the characteristics of ripe rice are:

  1. The leaves turn yellow
  2. Stems brown
  3. Curved rice stalks

The second stage is as follows:
Prepare a rice stalk cutter such as a rice sickle or a lawn mower. This stage is very difficult because we have to cut the rice stalks and collect them somewhere and put them together. Several people can do this cutting of rice stalks depending on the width of the land that has to be picked. This time I invited a friend of six (6) people, the process of cutting from rice stalks takes quite a long time, around two days to three days because my plantations are approximately 17 chains or a little less than one hectare. We have to be patient in this process because old rice is prone to falling or falling out.

The next step is separating the rice on the stalks that have been cut, we use a special machine to separate the rice so that the rice completely falls off to the ground and is clean from the rice stalks. This stage is also complicated because we are controlled by a machine, we cannot stop inserting tree trunks into the thresher machine, therefore we need two people to do the task of inserting the rice stalks into the thresher machine, these two people share the task, the first person serves the person who enters the machine. rice stalks to rice thresher machine. Then the third and fourth people collect rice that has fallen from the thresher machine and put it in the rice storage sacks, this part must be considered because we also have to be diligent in choosing rice that has contents and rice that has no fruit even though it is assisted by a thresher machine with a fan. . And the fifth person is tasked with sewing the rice that has been separated from the rice stalks and throwing away the rice stalks that have been separated from the rice.

When you have finished picking rice, the next step is to dry the rice in the hot sun, this process is very important because it is to maintain the quality of the rice that will be sold or milled to be used as the staple food of everyone. This rice drying takes two days to three days so that the rice when milled does not break. So that it is intact and looks perfect.

My family is Cambodian, and I lived there for nearly 10 years. These scenes are very similar to things I used to see in the countryside there. Rice is life!! In Cambodian "Did you eat rice yet?" is how people ask how you are doing.
