We generally perceive the hibernation process associated with extreme cold. Perhaps the most important reference I have regarding hibernation are bears, and although in my country there are only two varieties of bears, these being the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the Palmero Bear (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), they do not hibernate, Well, they do not need it, since there are no marked seasonal differences in this area of the world, so it is not necessary to force them to take refuge and suspend their vital functions, since hibernation in animals basically consists of them entering a state of animation suspended, in order to save energy and fat, avoiding dying from exposure to extreme cold and lack of food.
Generalmente percibimos al proceso de hibernación asociado al frío extremo. Quizás el referente más importante que poseo respecto a la hibernación, son los osos, y aunque en mi país sólo hay dos variedades de osos, siendo estos el Oso Frontino (Tremarctos ornatus) y el Oso Palmero (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), ellos no hibernan, pues no tienen necesidad de ello, ya que no existen marcadas diferencias estacionales en esta zona del mundo, que les obligue a refugiarse y a suspender sus funciones vitales, porque la hibernación en animales, básicamente consiste en que éstos entren en un estado de animación suspendida, a fin de ahorrar energía y grasa, evitando morir por la exposición al frío extremo y a la falta de alimento.
I make this brief introduction regarding hibernation, because I have seen a behavior in the morrocoys that could be said to be a kind of hibernation. Hago esta breve introducción respecto a la hibernación, porque he visto un comportamiento en los morrocoyes que podría decirse, es una especie de hibernación. Esto ocurre en los meses más calurosos del año, de Febrero a Abril, luego entre Agosto y Octubre, se vuelve a presentar el mismo comportamiento. I don't know if the proper term is hibernation, but the truth is that these animals go into torpor, which, although it is not as long as that of animals in very cold areas, is important, because they can be up to five or six weeks like in suspended animation. In general, they are buried in areas where the earth is soft, or they are introduced where there is decomposing plant matter, for example, trunks, branches, in order to remain hidden and protected from the inclement sun. They also hide where there are low, bushy shrubs. You can see in the photos that I took in my solar, how some of these animals are protected.
No sé si el término adecuado es hibernación, pero lo cierto es que estos animales entran en un letargo, que si bien no es tan prolongado como el que tienen los animales de zonas muy frías, es importante, porque pueden estar incluso hasta cinco o seis semanas como en animación suspendida. Por lo general se entierran en zonas en donde la tierra es blanda, o se introducen en donde hay materia vegetal en descomposición, por ejemplo troncos, ramas, a fin de quedar ocultos y a resguardo del inclemente sol. También se ocultan en donde hay arbustos bajos y tupidos. Pueden ver en las fotos que tomé en mi solar, cómo se resguardan algunos de estos animales.
In my lot or backyard there are 30 morrocoys, these being the two endemic species of Venezuela: the red-legged morrocoy or sabanero (Chelonoidis carbonaria) and the yellow-legged morrocoy (Chelonoidis denticulata) which inhabits semi-jungle areas. I have both species, and the behavior is very similar, they even coexist without any problem, although the yellow-legged morrocoyes are a bit bad-tempered, they have a more dominant behavior, perhaps because they are bigger.
En mi solar o patio trasero habitan 30 morrocoyes, siendo estos de las dos especies endémicas de Venezuela: Morrocoy de patas rojas o sabanero (Chelonoidis carbonaria) y el morrocoy de patas amarillas (Chelonoidis denticulata) el cual habita en las zonas semi selváticas. Yo tengo de ambas especies, y el comportamiento es muy similar, incluso conviven sin problema alguno, aunque los morrocoyes de patas amarillas son un poco malgeniados, tienen un comportamiento más dominante, quizás porque son más grandes.
When I did the bibliographical review, I found a reference to the fact that the red-legged morrocoyes do make this long rest, which I have named hibernation. And certainly, they can last two, three, five or seven days asleep, as long as they have drunk and eaten enough, and this occurs more frequently the larger the animal is, that is, the larger the more rest. After this hibernation period, they emerge from their hiding places, voraciously hungry and thirsty, so I always try to provide them with enough food and water. They eat and drink, and then they retire again to rest, until the rains arrive and they are more active, even mating activities begin.
Cuando hice la revisión bibliográfica, encontré una referencia a que los morrocoyes de patas rojas sí hacen este largo descanso, al cual yo he nombrado hibernación. Y ciertamente, ellos pueden durar dos, tres, cinco o siete días como dormidos, siempre y cuando hayan bebido y comido lo suficiente, y eso se presenta con más frecuencia mientras el animal es más grande, o sea, mientras más grande, más descanso. Transcurrido este período de hibernación, emergen de sus escondites, con un hambre y sed voraz, por lo que siempre procuro colocarles suficiente comida y agua. Ellos comen y beben, y luego se retiran nuevamente a descansar, hasta que llegan las lluvias y están más activos, incluso, inician las actividades de apareamiento.

Eso explica el porqué algunas personas que tienen morrocoyes en sus casa estos se desaparecen por un tiempo, a pesar de vivir en interiores.
