Recently, I passed by an abandoned house at the other end of the village. My grandmother used to live nearby, I often went there. My attention was drawn to a corner with different flowers. There were many big cornflowers. Apparently this is Centaurea montana, family Asteraceae. Likely they were specially planted here.
Нещодавно я проходила біля однієї закинутої хати, на іншому кінці села. Колись там неподалік жила моя бабуся, я часто туди ходила. Мою увагу привернув куточок із різноманітними квітами. Найбільше там було ось таких великих волошок, що належать до виду Волошка гірська. Швидше за все їх спеціально тут посадили. У пшениці чи житі у нас також ростуть волошки, але менші (Волошка синя).
I noticed a lot of ants on the flowers. For some reason in our village this species is called "blacksmiths", and its official name in Ukrainian is Red forest ant, and in Latin - Formica rufa. It is not surprising that these beauties got here, because the forest is very close (we have beech and pine parts of the forest here). There they have several large anthills, one of which is about a meter high! Such ants are found throughout Europe, but in some regions they are included in the list of animals whose numbers have declined sharply. These are very useful insects, they are forest rangers, because they eat dangerous caterpillars, regulate the amount of aphids. Sometimes they are specially relocated to new areas of forest where there are no ants.
Funny, but as children we were afraid of these ants.
На квітах я помітила чимало мурахів. Чомусь у нашому селі цей вид називають "ковалі", а офіційна його назва українською Руда лісова мураха, а на латині - Formica rufa. Не дивно, що ці красені сюди добралися, адже ліс зовсім неподалік (у нас тут є букова та соснова частини лісу). Там у них є кілька великих мурашників, один з яких має десь метр висоти! Такі мурахи водяться по всій Європі, але у деяких регіонах вони внесені до списку тварин, чисельність яких різко зменшилась. Це дуже корисні комахи, вони санітари лісу, адже знижують небезпечну гусінь, регулюють кількість тлі. Іноді їх спеціально переселяють на нові ділянки лісу, де ще немає мурахів.
Смішно, але у дитинстві ми страшенно боялися конкретно цього виду. Може тому що вони більші від їх садових родичів?

Красиві волошки. І ковалі теж нічого:) Хотілося би собі такі квіти десь у саду!
