En retrospectiva, yo estaba sentado frente al monitor, leyendo mis posts viejos en un intento de encontrarme con la inspiración, que no llegaba por ningún lugar. En la reseña que escribí hace poco más de un mes sobre Zuko, mi personaje favorito de Avatar: La Leyenda de Aang encontré la respuesta. Mientras la leía me dije: «Ey, puedo escribir algo más sobre Avatar» y ya que dicho post trató sobre la primera de las dos series de este universo decidí que lo justo sería escribir algo sobre la segunda, que también es fantástica; así llegué a esto, un artículo sobre Amon, el primer antagonista de La Leyenda de Korra, en el que intentaré explicar por qué, según yo, es el mejor villano de toda la serie. Está de más aclarar que en los siguientes párrafos asumo que cualquier posible lector ya ha visto la serie en cuestión. Espero que estas líneas sean de su agrado.
La guerra de los cien años, en la cual el Avatar Aang derrotó al Señor del Fuego Ozai, terminó y las cuatro naciones lograron restaurar la paz. Como parte de ese símbolo de paz nació la Ciudad República, capital de la República Unida de Naciones. Con esta premisa inicia lo más relevante de Avatar: La Leyenda de Korra. Pronto nos enteramos de que Ciudad República es hogar de un personaje misterioso que, para el momento en el que se nos da a conocer, es una figura reconocida para muchos ciudadanos, y un símbolo especialmente para una porción de la población que vive "sometida": los no maestros.
Este misterioso e irónicamente famoso sujeto se hace llamar Amon y, en principio, se muestra como un partidario de la igualdad, un enemigo de la opresión; sin embargo desde el primer instante da mala espina, es obvio que es el villano, y nada es blanco o negro alrededor de este personaje lleno de escalas de grises.
Si bien Ciudad República nació como como una especie de alegoría a la unión de las cuatro naciones, propiciada por el Avatar Aang, y en efecto personas de todas las naciones aprendieron a convivir en la capital, siempre existió una porción de la población –no maestros– que se vio, en muchos casos, sometida a los atropellos de otra porción –maestros–; y es que en un mundo donde seres humanos pueden lanzarse ondas de viento, rocas, hielo, agua, fuego y hasta relámpagos a voluntad, no es novedad imaginarse que existirán algunos que usarán esos poderes para hacer desmanes y aprovecharse de otros.
Ahí, en ese rencor que hacia los maestros que germinó en muchos no maestros, es donde entra Amon; sabe que los no maestros se sienten abusados, toca esa fibra sensible de la gente común, del indefenso oprimido a la voluntad del temible opresor, y estoy seguro de que, por momentos, puede hacerle pensar a cualquier espectador que su ideal es el correcto; de cierta forma el personaje tiene razón en lo que profeza y eso es, principalmente, lo que lo hace ser un gran antagonista: su propósito, en base, es noble. Lo cuestionable, en dado caso, son sus métodos. Claro, al fin y al cabo es el antagonista y hay que hacer que sea malo maloso porque la serie no se llama "La Leyenda de Amon", el Avatar Korra tiene que vivir de algo.

Amon siempre deja esa sensación de que oculta algo, más aún a medida de que transcurren los capítulos. El tipo parece una máquina de secretos (y vaya que sí tiene muchos secretos que van revelándose a cuentagotas), populista, que motiva a un sector de la población a odiar al otro disfrazándolo con consignas de igualdad y paz. Ahora que lo pienso es, básicamente, un político de izquierda cualquiera, y sabe cómo hacer que las personas lo sigan.
No me malentiendan, que el personaje sea eso (básicamente un Fidel Castro que sabe kung fu) no quiere decir que me desagrade, de hecho es todo lo contrario, me encanta porque como villano funciona perfectamente y me parece una pena que un personaje de tanta talla no pudiera continuar su desarrollo en las temporadas posteriores.
Ni siquiera The Last Airbender, antecesora de esta serie, desarrolló de una forma tan completa a sus antagonistas (aquí no incluyo a Zuko porque no es un antagonista como tal en toda la serie); A este personaje, que sabemos que es malo, lo desentrañamos a lo largo de la historia, llegamos incluso a conocer su infancia y vemos cómo es que se convirtió en un desquiciado por culpa, en gran medida, a las ansias de poder de su padre.
Particularmente ese momento en el que Yakone ordena a sus pequeños hijos, Noatak y Tarrlok, a hacerse sangre control uno al otro es desgarrador; Es el momento más revelador respecto a este personaje porque comprobamos, una vez más, que la mayoría de los "malvados" en el mundo fueron, alguna vez, niños inocentes que probablemente no habrían sido tan malos de no haber tenido una muy mala influencia por parte de alguien muy cercano; pasa en el universo de Avatar y pasa en la vida real.

In retrospect, I was sitting in front of the monitor, reading my old posts in an attempt to find inspiration, which was nowhere to be found. In the review I wrote a little over a month ago about Zuko, my favourite character from Avatar: The Legend of Aang, I found the answer. While reading it I said to myself: "Hey, I can write something more about Avatar" and since that post was about the first of the two series of this universe I decided that it would be fair to write something about the second one, which is also fantastic; so I came to this, an article about Amon, the first antagonist of The Legend of Korra, in which I will try to explain why, according to me, he is the best villain of the whole series. It goes without saying that in the following paragraphs I assume that any potential reader has already seen the series in question. I hope you enjoy these lines.
The Hundred Years' War, in which Avatar Aang defeated the Fire Lord Ozai, ended and the four nations were able to restore peace. As part of this symbol of peace, Republic City, the capital of the United Republic of Nations, was born. With this premise begins the most relevant part of Avatar: The Legend of Korra. We soon learn that Republic City is home to a mysterious character who, by the time we are introduced to her, is a recognisable figure to many citizens, and a symbol especially for a portion of the population that lives "under subjugation": the non-teachers.
This mysterious and ironically famous guy calls himself Amon and, at first, he is shown as a supporter of equality, an enemy of oppression; however, from the very first moment he gives a bad impression, it is obvious that he is the villain, and nothing is black and white around this character full of grey scales.
Although Republic City was born as a sort of allegory for the union of the four nations, brought about by Avatar Aang, and indeed people from all nations learned to live together in the capital, there was always a portion of the population (non-masters) who were, in many cases, subjected to the outrages of another portion (masters); In a world where human beings can hurl waves of wind, rocks, ice, water, fire and even lightning at will, it is not new to imagine that there will be some who will use these powers to misuse them and take advantage of others.
There, in that resentment towards the masters that germinated in many non-masters, is where Amon comes in; he knows that the non-masters feel abused, he touches the heartstrings of the common people, of the helpless oppressed at the will of the fearsome oppressor, and I am sure that, at times, he can make any viewer think that his ideal is the right one; in a way the character is right in what he professes and that is, mainly, what makes him a great antagonist: his purpose, at base, is noble. What is questionable, if anything, are his methods. Of course, he is the antagonist after all, and he has to be made to be a bad guy because the series isn't called "The Legend of Amon ", Avatar Korra has to make a living at something.

Amon always leaves you with the feeling that he is hiding something, even more so as the chapters go on. The guy seems like a secret machine (and boy, does he have a lot of secrets that are revealed in dribs and drabs), a populist, who motivates one section of the population to hate the other by dressing it up in slogans of equality and peace. Come to think of it, he is basically a left-wing politician, and he knows how to get people to follow him.
Don't get me wrong, just because the character is just that (basically a Fidel Castro who knows kung fu) doesn't mean I dislike him, in fact it's quite the opposite, I love him because as a villain he works perfectly and I think it's a shame that a character of such stature couldn't continue his development in later seasons.
Not even The Last Airbender, the predecessor of this series, developed its antagonists as fully (I don't include Zuko here because he is not an antagonist as such in the whole series); this character, who we know is evil, is unravelled throughout the story, we even get to know his childhood and we see how he became unhinged largely because of his father's lust for power.
Particularly that moment when Yakone orders her young sons, Noatak and Tarrlok, to control each other's blood is heartbreaking; it is the most revealing moment about this character because we see, once again, that most of the "bad guys" in the world were once innocent children who probably would not have been so bad had they not had a very bad influence from someone very close to them; it happens in the Avatar universe and it happens in real life.
