NaPodPoMo 2021 Day 29: After I am gone

in NaPodPoMo2 years ago

I have been doing the #NaPodPoMo podcast challenge all this month. It was started by @epodcaster.

Not your key

I have been pondering mortality and thinking about how I could pass on my cryptocurrency to others when I am gone. I need to leave them instructions on what to do, but also have a secure way to pass on the keys. I am looking into what I can do with LastPass.

What are others doing?

I talk about this some more in the podcast.

Our digital legacy is something previous generations didn't have to worry about. In modern times the digital assets can be more valuable than physical assets. So yeah, having a good plan in place is important. Do I have one right now? Somewhat, but your episode reminded me that I need to hone in on a more solid path for my heirs.

Need to keep updating it as things change. Can others access all your photos? They may need passwords for various online accounts, including email. I will look around to see what gets suggested.

I know I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with your #NaPodPoMo podcasts! Really enjoyed the questions posed in this one.

I think about this topic. Especially my own mortality.
I was brought up to also think that one day I could be ‘hit by a bus’ and it’s all over. Just like you said.

One thing that concerns me is how fast things evolve on this platform. Instructions written today are perhaps unlikely to be relevant in a year or two. Maybe an app has a re-brand or totally different way of logging in? Or doesn’t exist?
This could render instructions to a newbie pretty baffling.

I wonder if there’s a platform or app of its own accord that could deal with solving these kind of issues?
Maybe in return for 5% of the funds recovered and cashed out.

There is potential for services to help with this. I will just try to keep updating my notes. It will help if others in the family know the basics. I have accounts for my kids that are curating, so they will have something there for them.

Just subscribed to the podcast via the RSS feed. That way I can just listen in a playlist rather than going to the podomatic website, which doesn't work on my phone browser - it wants me to download the app. The podcast plays, but I can't click on your profile to see more.

I subscribe to lots of podcasts, including my own so I can check it works. I use Pocket Casts on Android. This series are mostly pretty short. Got one more to do today for the challenge.

I’ve been thinking about this, too.
But I would want to back up my back up 🙂

Yes, extra, secure copies are a good idea. A flash drive with a password is a possibility.

I need to start thinking about how to pass on my digital assets... I do have a text file which only certain people have access to that gives them some pointers in the right direction - but nothing that would help them with Crypto (yet). As my account (and the value of Hive!) keeps growing it's becoming more important to address that. Thanks for the reminder!

I use 1Password for password management but I feel like for me I would prefer some kind of DIY/physical solution than relying on the services of a company something from a company like them or LastPass.

I'll be sure to post when I figure out what I'm going to do!

Those crypto assets can soon be worth a lot, so it needs some thinking about. I will look around to see what others do.

LastPass is okay. I stopped using it a while ago because they changed their policies and it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Now I use Bitwarden. It seems to be pretty good. I have a lot of my stuff on paper in a safe, but I know I need to do a better job and have more detailed instructions.

I've not looked into Bitwarden, but they seem to have some similar features. I've got so much stuff in Lastpass I'd have to see if there was a way to migrate across if I decided to move.

It seems I got a few people thinking about this issue.

You can migrate from one to the other. I did that. My biggest issue was the fact that they started limiting you to using LastPass on only 1 device with the paid version. I ended up getting the family package for Bitwarden.

I do pay for Lastpass, but that family package might be better
