What a pleasure it is to be visiting again this wonderful community, unfortunately I don't have the chance to visit you more often, I have few opportunities to meet specimens belonging to the fabulous world of insects. Although, I confess that when I leave home, I am always very attentive, and crossing my fingers, to have the opportunity to come across one of these little friends. Well, what do you know, a few days ago I was lucky, I was waiting for my husband to run some errands in a shopping mall and I decided to sit in an internal garden, hoping to be lucky enough to photograph something interesting.
Para mi alegría, una abejita decidió alimentarse en unas pequeñas flores amarillas que se encontraban cerca de donde me encontraba y por supuesto, aproveche de documentar fotográficamente el momento. Estos curiosos bichitos pertenecen a uno de los ordenes más numerosos del reino de los insectos, el orden Himenóptero y su estirpe, está conformada por más de 20.000 especies. Son uno de los insectos que tienen más tiempo habitando nuestro querido planeta, se supone que evoluciono a partir de una misma línea ancestral, los Himenópteros Aculeados.
To my delight, a little bee decided to feed on some small yellow flowers that were near where I was and of course, I took the opportunity to photographically document the moment. These curious little bugs belong to one of the most numerous orders of the insect kingdom, the order Hymenoptera and its lineage is made up of more than 20,000 species. They are one of the insects that have been inhabiting our beloved planet the longest, it is assumed that they evolved from the same ancestral line, the Aculeate Hymenoptera.
Curiosamente, comparten el mismo origen de las hormigas, y en el mismo orden de ideas, sus supuestos ancestros, estaban vinculados con una familia denominada Crabronidae, la cual, paradójicamente eran depredadores de insecto. Los investigadores presumen, que el polen, entro a la dieta de las abejas primitivas, como una especie de gusto adquirido, al estar cubierto el cuerpo de algunas de sus presas, con el polen, progresivamente se volvió parte de su alimentación y a la vez de la de sus crías, transformándose definitivamente, con el transcurrir del tiempo en su costumbre alimenticia por excelencia.
Curiously, they share the same origin as ants, and in the same order of ideas, their supposed ancestors were linked to a family called Crabronidae, which, paradoxically, were insect predators. Researchers presume that pollen entered the diet of primitive bees as a kind of acquired taste, as the bodies of some of their prey were covered with pollen, which progressively became part of their diet and at the same time that of their offspring, becoming definitively, with the passing of time, their food habit par excellence.
Como ya les comenté, las imágenes que hoy les comparto corresponden a una abeja doméstica, conocida en el ámbito científico como Apis Mellifera. Estas amiguitas, son unas grandes amantes de las flores, bien sea, de las plantas Magnoliofitas o Angiospermas, por lo que, su hábitat se encuentra diseminado a lo largo y ancho de todo el mundo, exceptuando claro, la Antártida. Hoy en día, su alimentación se fundamenta en el polen y el néctar de las flores, aunque en el caso del polen la mayor cantidad es destinada a alimentar las larvas, por otro lado, es el néctar, el que les aporta la carga energética, necesaria para mantener activo su organismo.
As I already mentioned, the images I share with you today correspond to a domestic bee, known in the scientific field as Apis Mellifera. These little friends are great lovers of flowers, either Magnoliophytes or Angiosperms, so their habitat is scattered throughout the world, except, of course, Antarctica. Nowadays, their diet is based on pollen and nectar from flowers, although in the case of pollen, most of it is destined to feed the larvae. On the other hand, it is the nectar that provides them with the necessary energy to keep their organism active.
La mayoría de nosotros las amamos por el delicioso regalo de la miel, pero, eso es solo la punta del iceberg en cuanto a lo que representan las abejas, para nuestra supervivencia. Son parte esencial en el mantenimiento del equilibrio de la naturaleza, al contribuir a la sobrevivencia y diversidad de las plantas alrededor del mundo, cuya reproducción depende directamente de la intervención de estos insectos, polinizadores por excelencia. Las abejas, al alimentarse del néctar de una flor, transportan en sus pequeñas patas el polen de las partes masculina, hacia la parte femenina de otra flor, logrando con ello el maravilloso milagro de la polinización y con ello la reproducción vegetal.
Most of us love them for the delicious gift of honey, but that is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what bees represent for our survival. They are an essential part of maintaining the balance of nature, contributing to the survival and diversity of plants around the world, whose reproduction depends directly on the intervention of these insects, pollinators par excellence. Bees, by feeding on the nectar of a flower, transport on their little legs the pollen from the male parts to the female part of another flower, thus achieving the marvelous miracle of pollination and plant reproduction.
Con una vida media de cinco años y un tamaño máximo de 1,5 centímetros, estos pequeños insectos, normalmente conforman grupos sociales muy complejos, que hoy en día, aun, el ámbito científico no ha podido descifrar del todo. Ahora, basándonos en el comentario anterior, ciertamente, cuando nos referimos a las abejas, siempre nos identificamos con una organización social centrada en una colmena, donde encontraremos, una abeja reina y adicionalmente dos castas, los Zánganos y las Obreras. Sin embargo, el mundo de las abejas es muy diverso y también existen muchas especies que presentan un comportamiento solitario.
With an average lifespan of five years and a maximum size of 1.5 centimeters, these small insects normally form very complex social groups, which even today, the scientific field has not been able to decipher completely. Now, based on the previous comment, certainly, when we refer to bees, we always identify with a social organization centered in a hive, where we will find a queen bee and additionally two castes, the Drones and the Workers. However, the world of bees is very diverse and there are also many species with solitary behavior.
En lo que respecta a su aspecto, si tenemos la oportunidad de detallarlas, su cuerpo está cubierto de muchos pelitos, es más, como un detalle que me pareció realmente interesante, es que esta vellosidad posee estática, lo que facilita que el polen se adhiera a ella. Por otro lado, sus ojos son muy grande, abarcando la mayor parte de su cabeza, son, lo que se clasifica como ojos compuestos, en términos sencillos, al menos lo que entendí, cada uno de sus ojos están compuestos por 3 ocelos u ojos simple y se encargan de determinar la intensidad de la luz.
As far as their appearance is concerned, if we have the opportunity to detail them, their body is covered with many small hairs, moreover, as a detail that I found really interesting, is that this hairiness has static, which makes it easier for pollen to adhere to it. On the other hand, their eyes are very large, covering most of their head, they are, what is classified as compound eyes, in simple terms, at least what I understood, each of their eyes are composed of 3 ocelli or simple eyes and are responsible for determining the intensity of light.
En el caso de sus antenas son extraordinarias cumplen un gran número de funciones relacionadas con los sentidos, ya que, posee quimiorreceptores, además de servir de órgano gustativo y olfativo, es más, con ellas pueden oír ciertos sonidos de baja frecuencia, al sentir el movimiento del aire. A nivel general, su estructura bucal le permite, masticar y succionar, en el caso de las mandíbulas son las que le sirven para triturar. Ahora, en el interior de la cavidad bucal contiene una lengua muy larga que es la que le permite degustar el néctar de las flores.
In the case of their extraordinary antennae, they fulfill a great number of functions related to the senses, since they have chemoreceptors, in addition to serving as taste and olfactory organs; moreover, they can hear certain low frequency sounds by sensing the movement of the air. At a general level, its oral structure allows it to chew and suck, in the case of the jaws are those that serve to crush. Now, inside the oral cavity it contains a very long tongue that allows it to taste the nectar of flowers.
Su torso está constituido por 3 fragmentos y cada uno posee un par de patas, hay que resaltar que el par de patas delanteras, están provistas de una especie de peines, que le sirven para limpiar sus antenas. Adicionalmente, en cada uno de los dos últimos segmentos del tórax se ubican un par de alas, las cuales durante el vuelo se mueven sincrónicamente. En el caso del abdomen, este también se estructura en segmentos, pero en este caso son siete.
Its torso is made up of 3 fragments and each one has a pair of legs. It should be noted that the pair of front legs are provided with a kind of combs, which are used to clean its antennae. Additionally, in each of the last two segments of the thorax there is a pair of wings, which move synchronously during flight. The abdomen is also structured in segments, but in this case there are seven.
Por último, quería hablarle de sus depredadores, los cuales son muchos de hecho, iniciemos con las aves, entre las cuales se encuentran papamoscas, los vencejos, los abejarucos, las golondrinas y los alcaudones, todas estas especies atacan a las abejas en pleno vuelo. Ahora, también se encuentran las Pernis, las cuales atacan sus nidos, alimentándose en este caso de sus larvas. También hay mamíferos que representan un riesgo para estos insectos, los tejones, zorros, zorrillos, topos, osos, ratones y otros roedores, acostumbran tomar sus nidos y comerse sus larvas y la miel almacenada. Incluso, deben preocuparse, miembros de su propio mundo, algunas especies de avispas, las libélulas y las moscas asílida, también las tienen dentro de su menú alimenticio.
Finally, I wanted to tell you about their predators, which are many in fact, let's start with the birds, among which are flycatchers, swifts, bee-eaters, swallows and shrikes, all these species attack the bees in flight. Now, there are also the Pernis, which attack their nests, feeding in this case on their larvae. There are also mammals that pose a risk to these insects: badgers, foxes, skunks, moles, bears, mice and other rodents are accustomed to take their nests and eat their larvae and stored honey. Even, they should worry, members of their own world, some species of wasps, dragonflies and flies also have them in their food menu.
