Come see them closer

Welcoming in my blog...

We, and the nature around us, live in need of each other, in space and time

Papilio demoleus or jeruk butterfly, that's the name know in our area. The population is very small and very few even very rarely seen, especially in a location that does not have green leaves, unlike other ordinary tiger butterflies

(Papilio demoleus ®2021)

Giving the name (butterfly of oranges) is a reference to the background of the forerunner or the beginning of the process that occurs in the orange tree. Most of the eggs are laid in the leaves of the orange tree so that when the larvae are born they are very enthusiastic to eat each leaf itself.

If you look at this background, you can be sure that they often like citrus plants because their presence in the area takes a long time, starting from :

SquenceWhen become part ofBehavior
1 Being in the egg position The eggs are laid by the mother in each leaf (optional) and the staging period is 3-5 days depending on the air temperature in that area
2 When in a larvae position From eggs to larvae, caterpillars also continue to eat leaves with a very greedy behavior, while in a position the caterpillar always sheds its skin 4-6 times, until its body is larger or reaches 1000 times larger with the initial process (eggs)
3 When in a cocoon position From the larval form, it gradually turns into a special (cocoon) form, while the period in the cocoon is generally 12 days
4 Being in the shape of a butterfly So that in the end, from a cocoon a cute figure is born, namely a butterfly, while the life span of a butterfly is generally 1 week and there are also 5 days, depending on the species of each butterfly

If it is calculated that the life of a butterfly which starts from an egg to become a butterfly is about 25 days, namely,

  1. Become an egg for 5 days
  2. Become an larvae 3 days
  3. Become an cocoon 12 days
  4. Become an butterfly 5 days

Meanwhile, their presence on citrus plants takes a longer time, when compared to when they become butterfly candidates, which is 20 : 5 days starting from eggs, larvae, cocoons, while when they become beautiful butterflies they will leave the orange tree. True butterflies go wandering into new areas that deserve to thrive.

When observing the butterfly's life from beginning to end, it turns out that they keep doing the same thing every second in every loop of time, they keep doing the same thing over and over again in their every movement and flapping.

So, in this case, a statement arises for them, is each jeruk butterfly always in its nest or not? Or is it only when they become eggs, larvae, and cocoons in the orange tree?

Basically the butterfly itself, when it is born in every life or when it just comes out of the cocoon, already has its own partner in pairs, this behavior has occurred in every process. When the male is born first, then he will wait for the female as a companion for his life in the future. In general, every birth continues to produce a pair regularly, this literature has become their nature as butterfly.

It would be very lucky if every butterfly born in that location would soon find a mate, and they would continue to have a harmonious relationship throughout their lives.

They will continue to control each area of the citrus tree as a nest which is a breeding location as in the previous explanation.

So thus can be said, that almost 70 % of each orange tree butterfly always dominates and breed in that location

Then what about the butterfly that does not have a partner?

In contrast to butterflies that do not have partners when born from a cocoon, they do not occupy the initial location, or dominate the orange tree, but they will stray into areas that have partners who have the same fate as themselves.

This means that the butterfly will continue to fly looking for a fate similar to it, in general there are also female butterflies who are also waiting for their life partners. So in this case, the observation team named them as patrol butterflies, this name was also given based on their behavior which always flew all over the location on a mission.

The characteristics of the Jeruk butterfly or Papilio Demoleus

If you want to understand a little deeper about the characteristics of this butterfly, it's very easy, of course this can be marked by looking at each of the real characters in their wings.

Papilio Demoleus, has a very familiar pattern, which has a black base or the basic color of the wings is slightly brownish black and has white spots (patterns) on the wings, while the shape in the pattern is different for each butterfly, although at first glance it looks similar but there are even a slight difference.

While these patterns fill (full) parts of the butterfly's wings, these patterns spread throughout the Discal (expert term) to a certain part (Marginal) on the forewings, while on the inner wings there are differences, but unfortunately the author is unable to presenting the photo of the wings, this is due to the effect of the pose that should not be disturbed, and there is no way to see it in this occasion.

Although the shape is different from several other types of butterflies, such as the tiger butterfly in general, it is generally known that its body posture is not too big compared to other butterflies, only having some small size differences, namely :

SequenceObjectSize
1 Antenna lenght 17-18 mm
2 Body length 25 cm
3 Front wing length 40-41 cm
4 Rear wing length 29-30 mm

The sizes that have been compiled above are the results of the local team's general report, but sometimes there are also several species of this Jeruk butterfly which have a size larger than the description above, but are not used as a benchmark because their presence is not common.
