Memories (Charcoal Sketch From My First Exhibition)

As you all know, in 2015, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake. The day, April 25th, 2015, was the darkest day for the people of Nepal. Some lost their homes, some lost their families.

The epicenter of the earthquake was a place called Barpak. It is a village located at the top of a hill in the district Gorkha. It suffered more than one can imagine. There were a total of 1400 homes in the village that were all identical and gave a homely feeling to every person living there. Due to the earthquake, every single one of these homes was destroyed.

Now, even though the village has been rebuilt, things aren’t the same. The meaning of “home” for the people has changed forever and they are constantly reminded of the horrors of that day.

So, there was an ongoing project called “ghar”, being undertaken by my senior. This project delves into the details of the life of the people of Barpak. It aims to show the true significance of the word home, and what it means to the people in contrast to what it meant before.

I was offered an opportunity to work on this project as an artist. And so, I have made a few artworks related to the topic.

Here is my first artwork named “memories”. It showcases the transition period for the people after the earthquake when they had to stay in temporarily-built shelters, left with the memories of their homes and the loved ones they had lost.
