Upcycling A Entertainment Unit: I Am Always Right. πŸ›

in Hive Diy β€’ 2 years ago

I promise there's no more furniture in my house to renovate - almost. This TV entertainment unit was the one I wanted to do the most as I hated the orange varnish, whilst still liking the orange wall (besides, we will never paint over that - imagine how much white paint I'd need!).

A little side note: please don't judge me on the size of my telly. It's an older model if that helps. We would NEVER have spent money on a fancy telly like this. But whenever my Dad upgrades his Sony he passes his old one on to us. I have to admit watching films on a quality screen is pretty good....

I had an idea of what I wanted to do with the unit for ages but couldn't manage to talk Jamie into it. He spent two hours looking for an entertainment unit on marketplace, even though I said it was pointless. Finally, he gave up after realizing they were all either too exy, too ugly, didn't fit records, or too far away. Why don't they bloody listen to us to start with, these husbands? Sigh.

We entirely replaced the top, as we wanted a similar wood top to our dining table. These cost 128 bucks from Bunnings and believe it or not was EXACTLY the size we needed. We wanted it to overhang slightly too. We screwed it on and finished it with furniture wax. Doesn't it look beautiful?

The insides were rough sanded and painted with Fusion mineral paint in coal. I was a bit worried that it would be too black in context with the TV and speakers but it works perfectly in my opinion, especially contrasted with the wood.

The legs and the rest were sanded free of varnish (thank God for the orbital sander!) and waxed. I will wax it a number of times over the next few weeks so the wood is super protected. Our homemade table has retained it's beauty after ten years of being waxed and using placemats, so we prefer it over other treatments. It really shows off the natural wood.

Jamie spent a few hours organizing his vinyl and setting up the TV and stereo properly, playing tunes as he went.

And yes, he admitted that upcycling this unit was an excellent idea, and he should have listened to me in the first place.

A good husband admits he is wrong.

With Love,

Loook at that vinyl collection!!! And those paintings on the walls!! And that rusty orange coloured walls and wooden tables.....

I must say I am jealous!! This is exactly the kind of house I'd love to live in one day. I really do love wood in everything so I approve your choice 100%!!

Also the tv unit looks stunning. Also your table! Self made even. You guys are so talented!

Thanks so much! What a great comment. We have worked hard to make our house harmonious and lovely, even though we don't have a lot of money.

It's beautiful! What was life like before the orbital sander? I remember helping renovate old furniture as a child. And we did the entire process with the manual "elbow grease". Love your fireplace! Does it also heat water? We have friends with a teeny version of yours. However they still get a bread baked in there and a small amount of hot water. And can it crank out a lot of heat! Impressive

the orbital sander is GOLD!! I recall sanding a dresser by hand once .. I vowed never to do it again!

Funny we are looking at replacing that wood burner. I love it, but it doesn't kick up enough heat and only fits small logs which is a pain!!

That would be my problem! Tiny logs. I don't think so

Your house looks amazing! Love the orange wall as it comes with a dull tone.

And the project looks even better.

I am sitting over admiring the words 'almost done' knowing all too well that I haven't even begun. The tools are the main reason why but I can't wait to get started. I think DIY is the best way to go about comfort or the joy of having a customised home.

Ps:...from a mother of teens, the TV looks great to me. Mine has a scar on the right side of its screen since it was two weeks old. I have refused to replace it πŸ˜…

the orbital sander is the best ever! I don't think I'd contemplate doing it without it! And it wasn't expensive either.

I love the orange wall too... Lucky, asit would take a LOT of coats to return it to white! It's very warm. Coloured walls are kinda out of fashion here but I still like it. It's MY space so be damned if I will follow a trend!!

We are too quick to replace things. As long as your TV works that's great!!

I appreciate the tip on the orbit sander, I'll be getting it after I get the drill. Preferred brands? Hopefully that it won't be expensive here either.

We are just falling in love with coloured walls but I don't think my being in my current apartment allows me to do that. I can imagine dull colours hovering around.

It has a few problems but they have been withstood for over a year now. And I'd rather replace my aged fridge before I take on the TV.

I judge you based on your lack of an adequate vinyl collection πŸ˜‰ you can never organize a music collection without spending lots of time listening along the way haha I recently read that 9 out of 10 husbands believe their wife is always right. The 10th disappeared and hasn't been heard from since 🀣

Haha we have more vinyl but it's on another shelf. These are his favourites. We are on the look out for a new record player.

Haha yes I've heard that wifie joke πŸ€£πŸ˜‚

LOL @riverflows It does suit the room very well. I love the grain of your dining table.

Us too! It's served us well and we made it when we had very little money. Waxing really brings it alive too.

Orbital Sanders are the best!!!! You did an amazing job and the whole place looks great!

What a stroke of genius using the same wood as the table and you got rewarded with a perfect fit. And it really turned out great! Perfect size for those LPs! What a great dad! Sony too.

A good husband admits when he is wrong. Yes. Indeed.

They never do bloody listen the first time, do they??

Yesterday I picked my moody abandoned-mother self up off the floor and STARTED to make my house-space the way I want it, now that I'm alone again. And yes, it does involve sexing up a whole lot of old piece of furniture. Some of them aren't mine and belong to the house, so it makes much more sense to tart them up rather than storing them and filling them with new stuff....

I have some fixer-upper posts ahead of me...

Oh cool, bring on the fixer upper posts! Just picked up a cheap bit of furniture from marketplace and it's worst than I thought, which is quite depressing. But I plan on making a 'fantasy' piece from it - something fun. Maybe not for me personally but to sell, and I don't expecti to get much, but it'll be a fun creative project nontheless.
