There are many well-known quotes on the topic I'm bringing you this week. One of the most famous is Seneca's: "Life is a play; it's not how long it lasts that matters, but how well it's acted." But to Seneca's, I add the fact that, besides being performers, we are also the writers and directors of our own play.
Look, every day I wake up knowing I have a list of roles I must play. They aren't costumes; they're real commitments. I'm a father. That means listening patiently, correcting without hurting, and being present, even when I'm tired. I'm a friend, which implies loyalty and honesty, sometimes telling uncomfortable truths. I am a husband, a role that requires constant attention, respect, and teamwork.
I am a writer and editor, professions that demand discipline, self-criticism, and the will to improve every day. I am a university professor, with the responsibility of educating others, of igniting a spark of curiosity. This is not an exhaustive list, and each of you will have your own. The point is that we have many roles to fulfill, and the obligation to do them well. It's not about being perfect, but about being conscious and responsible in each one.
The crucial thing is to understand that this set of roles was not arbitrarily imposed on us. We chose them. Perhaps someone suggested we become parents, or encouraged us to pursue a career, but it was we who said "yes." That's the screenwriter's part. Every "yes" and every "no" we give is a line of dialogue we write, a scene we structure. Accepting a job, committing to a relationship, deciding to move to another city—these are all choices in the narrative. And the course of our destiny depends entirely on these choices, made day after day. If we don't like the character we're playing, we must revise the script we wrote. The responsibility is non-transferable.
Finally, there's the direction. Our dreams and aspirations are the central theme of our story. They aren't abstract ideas; they are the goals that give meaning to the plot. How we strive to achieve them is what defines the quality of the narrative. Hard work, perseverance in the face of failure, the discipline to get up day after day—that's what makes us grow. Every obstacle is a narrative conflict we must resolve. There are no shortcuts. Personal growth doesn't happen while we wait for things to change; it happens when, as directors, we make the decision to act, to modify the staging, to rehearse again and again until the scene works.
So, yes. We are actors, director, and screenwriter. We play the roles we ourselves wrote and direct the effort to give them meaning. There's no audience to blame for bad reviews, no producer who gave us a bad script. The role is ours. And its success or failure depends entirely on how we approach these three roles. Una de las más conocidas es la de Séneca: La vida es una obra teatral que no importa cuánto haya durado, sino lo bien que haya sido representada. Pero a la de Séneca le sumo el hecho que, además de intérprete, también somos los guionistas y directores de nuestra obra teatral.
Miren, cada día me levanto y sé que tengo una lista de personajes que debo encarnar. No son disfraces; son compromisos reales. Soy padre. Eso significa escuchar con paciencia, corregir sin herir y estar presente, incluso cuando estoy cansado. Soy amigo, lo que implica lealtad y honestidad, a veces diciendo verdades incómodas. Soy marido, un rol que requiere atención constante, respeto y trabajo en equipo.
Soy escritor y editor, oficios que exigen disciplina, autocrítica y la voluntad de mejorar cada día. Soy profesor universitario, con la responsabilidad de formar a otros, de encender una chispa de curiosidad. Esta no es una lista exhaustiva, y cada uno de ustedes tendrá la suya. El cómo luchamos para cumplirlos es lo que define la calidad del relato. El trabajo duro, la perseverancia frente al fracaso, la disciplina para levantarnos día tras día, eso es lo que nos hace crecer. Cada obstáculo es un conflicto narrativo que debemos resolver. No hay atajos. El crecimiento personal no sucede mientras esperamos que las cosas cambien; sucede cuando, como directores, tomamos la decisión de actuar, de modificar la puesta en escena, de ensayar una y otra vez hasta que la escena funcione.
Así que, sí. Somos actores, director y guionista. Actuamos los roles que nosotros mismos escribimos y dirigimos el esfuerzo para darles sentido.
