Chasing The Fog

While writing my last blog, I noticed that Louisville was under a Dense Fog Advisory until the following morning. Seemed like the universe was sending me a not so subtle hint, considering I was working on posting fog photos from Maysville.

Staying up until 0200 working on a blog isn't very conducive to getting up early, didn't manage to get up in time to catch the sunrise. Crawled out of bed just after sunrise and headed for the Ohio River, still managed to catch the last couple hours of the fog. By the time I made it down to the riverfront, the low lying fog wasn't very dense but looking up was a different story.

For reasons that were never clear, the whole area smelled like the factory that blew up here last year, a peculiar sweet, burnt smell. Looked around for a source but only spotted these folks playing with the I-65 bridge. Going to blame them.

Had half a dozen places I wanted to be shooting and not enough time to get to half of them. Needed my long lens too. Ended up wandering down to the edge of downtown before heading back upstream and hiking out on the Big Four bridge. With the sun up, the fog was dissipating rather quickly, had diminished noticeably by the time I made it up on the bridge.

The sun also made for some weird light, had my camera's light meter being even more untrustworthy than usual. Was expecting to have to contend with not enough light, wound up with plenty of it but in an oddly diffuse fashion that was tricky to shoot. The whole adventure ended up being more of an exercise in figuring out how to get it right the next time, wasn't particularly satisfied with my results.

Still got a few I don't hate. Going to have to keep my eyes peeled for another fog advisory and see what difference an early wakeup and a bit of a plan makes. Haven't the foggiest when that will happen though. . .
