While in the backyard of my grandmother’s house in Venezuela, I became intrigued by the vast collection of items, or odds and ends, that had accumulated there, some having been part of the household inventory for years, or even decades. These objects may have once looked better or still had some functional life left in them, which is why they were kept, with the hope that they might one day be restored, even as time passed and they simply continued to deteriorate further. Yet, some items remain useful despite being completely rusted; for instance, a wheelbarrow or lengths of pipe can still serve a purpose, even if they don’t look particularly appealing.
My attention was drawn, in particular, to all the metal objects covered in rust. I find the coppery color palette quite attractive, though I certainly don’t like things to be rusted, but in that moment, they were perfect for a few photographs. After so many years of seeing these items tucked away in the backyard, where they really just make that part of the house look unsightly, I suddenly discovered a certain beauty in them, which is why I chose them as the subject for a series of photos.
And so, rust turned out to be beautiful, the very centerpiece of the photographic exhibition I am presenting here.

The moral: Let’s not dismiss anything, because everything can appear good or bad depending on the lens through which we view it, in this case, the lens we happen to be using on our camera.
