Here's 5 things to know before playing Splinterlands.
1. You need spellbook to earn Dark Energy Crystals. 
While the game is free-to-play, you need to avail the summoner's spellbook to start earning DEC and take advantage of its play to earn model. Use my referal link to purchase your spellbook.

2. Splintershards or SPS tokens can be earned passively.
The daily airdrops guarantees daily supply of SPS tokens until next year. This means that if there are times you won't be able to play the game, that's completely fine. As long as you have airdrop points then you are eligible to get SPS tokens.
3. Enery Capture Rate
This limits how much Dark Energy Crystals each player can earn for every win. This regenerates at a rate of about 1% per hour. In essence, you can play down to 76% and come back the next day expecting to have 100% capture rate.
4. You can rent cards
Unlike other cards games, Splinterlands has a healthy community market and a rental system which is very unique to this game. You can rent cards for days which can help you win games or test out cards first before making a purchase decision.
5. It pays to play.
Do not expect to have immediate high rewards. There's no promise of being an overnight millionaire. What i can say for sure though is that this game rewards those who invest time and effort into playing. Start slow, build up your deck and learn the game. You will get to higher leagues without even noticing it.

your last point is well taken. It is my approach as well. I rent cards, I try to learn from every battle, from opponents and from my mistakes. I started a spread sheet, where I try to analyse cards and battles and I consume posts/videos from pros. Overall, this strategy bears fruits already, and I think in 2 to 3 seasons, I will constantly play in Silver League without investing anything. But when the Chaos deck comes along, I'll buy the hell out of that :o).
Hahaha yeah. Cant wait for chaos deck to come out. This is one of those games i won’t hesitate spending on.
