in Splinterlands2 years ago (edited)

Happy 100th brawl! Star💫 here (@star-shroud) from the @SHIELD-OF-GLORY guild 🛡️ with the next edition of our guild-specific BRAWLS OF STEEL report ⚔️ In this edition we'll cover our results from this centennial brawl cycle. We also wanted to take a moment up front to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! to the #splinterlands team and the whole community at large for this amazing accomplishment---yet another first! 🎉

We love brawls so much 😍 and we only want to see the ecosystem get bigger and better. With SPS brawl rewards coming soon, making the right tweaks now will benefit us all in the long-run 💰 To that end, in this edition, we'll also take on the task of pressure testing the prevailing narrative that TIER 3 rewards are sufficient for more guilds to move into the system.

As we'll show you below, the actual rewards data indicates the opposite--LAST PLACE IN TIER 3 IS ALMOST WORSE THAN FIRST PLACE IN TIER 1. Yes, you heard that correctly. TIER 1. We hope the enormity of that of sinks in... 😕 And without any doubt, guilds do better by placing first or second in a TIER 2 brawl than coming in last in TIER 3.

We hope this analysis can be informative and helpful for other guilds, and the community at large, who are expressing a desire to initiate higher tier brawls. If SPS brawl rewards have a similar gap in disparity, then it is difficult to see how higher tier brawls will become viable.

Tier 2 vs. Tier 3

SoG held fast to TIER 2 again this brawl cycle---despite being ready, willing and chomping at the bit 🐴 to advance to TIER 3---for one simple reason: it doesn't make any sense for us to advance 🤷‍♂️ More than likely, it doesn't make sense for your guild to advance either.

Until the substantial gap in rewards disparity is closed (proven by the game data below), it will create significant headwinds, hampering the evolution of higher TIER brawls.

Despite many reward revamp promises, and despite the fact that TIER 3 brawls are finally happening again (3x in a row), we compare the hype to the actual in-game rewards data. You can see for yourself that advancing to TIER 3 still doesn't make strategic sense for any but the very, very top brawling guilds.

The 100th Brawl!

After a big turnaround between Cycles #98 and #99 (see post here) we came in second this brawl, getting edged out by LEGENDARY UNICORNS. Congrats to those legendary one-horned-horses on their incredible brawling skills 💪

SoG: The best from Cycle #100

Our top performers this week come from the usual list of suspects. Our fearless leader @zagorlord continued to lead by example, sweeping Fray 15 (gold foil | silver summoner cap | wild) yet again. Our overall top-performer, @vugtis, continued doing what vugtis does best, sweeping Fray 12 (regular foil | gold summoner cap | modern).

Other top performers included a pair of one-loss gems from @xsuilx (6-1) in Fray 13 (gold foil | bronze summoner cap | wild) and @ducecrypto (6-1) in Fray 14 (gold foil | bronze summoner cap | modern), while @anasazi (6-2) turned in another strong performance in Fray 1 (regular foil | novice summoner cap | wild).

Steemitromney (7-2) not only continued his run in Fray 11, but also welcomed another baby into the world! 👶 Congrats romney! 🎉

@Steemitromney (7-2) not only continued his run in Fray 11 (regular foil | gold summoner cap | wild) but also welcomed another baby into the world! 👶 Congrats romney! 🎉 We're glad to hear that Kralus delivered the baby safely to your home, and we hope to see them in the SoG feeder guild system soon.

SoG: The best overall

Regarding overall winrate from the past 35 brawl cycles, @vugtis continues to lead our guild with an impressive winrate of 78.23%. @zagorlord and @azircon also continue to hold the second and third spots, with similarly as impressive winrates of 75.89% and 72.36%, respectively.

Here are some additional notes of our interest from our guild:

  • @Xsuilx joined the +70% overall winrate club 📈 for brawl battles, solidifying his hold on the #4 spot in the guild and proving that he is highly skilled in the arena!

  • The guild purchased the MOSH PIT and SUPER SMASH BRAWL guilds which will now be known as AEGIS OF GLORY and GUARDIANS OF GLORY respectively (see @misterrogers post about AEGIS OF GLORY here)---for further details, also see our discord.

  • SHIELD OF GLORY welcomed three new members, @tarazkp, @justenjoy, and @cryptomillenials! We're excited to have them in the family as it continues to grow.

  • Speaking of growing families, as mentioned above, @steemitromney welcomed a new baby into the world! We expect they will be a top-notch brawler just like their dad.

  • AEGIS OF GLORY welcomed two of our own, @deceth and @rogerkitkit who will help bring the SoG brand to this critical new guild in our system.

  • Finally, if you were looking for a lesson on why it's VERY IMPORTANT to use taunt in a brawl battle with an opportunity ruleset, check out this win here from @champion-slayer ---legendary neutral GLADIUS card Tatiana Blayde simply goes offff.

Brawl Rewards: A look at the data 👀

As everyone who is reading this likely knows, a big decision that many guilds are facing right now is whether to advance from TIER 2 brawls to TIER 3? The prevailing narrative is that TIER 3 rewards are big enough, and have been more evenly distributed now, such that even coming in last in TIER 3 is better than coming in first in TIER 2. Well... we pressure tested that theory by gathering up the in-game data and actually comparing the results. Not only is the theory untrue, it's not even close to being true. In fact, a look at the data below proves that it's almost worse to come in last in in TIER 3 than it is to come in first in TIER 1. Yes, TIER 1.

Rewards analysis.png
Is it true that finishing last in TIER 3 is better than finishing first in TIER 2? No, definitely not. Not even close. It's almost worse than finishing first in TIER 1... 😕

As just one example, take a look at ROARIES TWENTIES and compare their 👑 rewards to ours this cycle. This is not to single anyone out, but simply to illustrate a point. ROARIES TWENTIES has been in all three of the most recent TIER 3 brawls. As shown below, they came in last in TIER 3 in Cycle #100 and received 29 👑 On the other hand, SHIELD OF GLORY continued to stay in TIER 2, only finished in second place, and received 65 👑... 😟

In fact, the 29 👑 rewarded to ROARING TWENTIES for their bravery and willingness to advance is almost less than the 25 👑 rewarded to KNIGHTS OF PRAETORIA for finishing first in a TIER 1 brawl... 😩

How can that be the outcome?

We are scratching our heads and asking ourselves the same question. But in the meantime, we don't find it strategically sound to acts as fodder because those extra crowns that guilds like ROARING TWENTIES are losing are not really being 'lost.' They are being fed up to the very top brawling guilds, essentially giving away their extra crowns 👑 at their own expense.

So, what should be done? It's not exactly rocket science to figure out 🚀 In fact, the solution has already been stated. It should be better to finish last in TIER 3 than it is to finish first in TIER 2. This is it. But it just isn't happening. Not only is it not happening, it's not even close to happening 😕 Until it does, its hard to see how it will make strategic sense for most guilds to advance to TIER 3 and beyond, unless they're simply not concerned with brawl rewards 👑🏅💰

CONCLUSION

We hope everyone found this post helpful and illuminating. Thanks to @moros👑 (leader of the CARDS OF FURY guild) for providing a deep dive on the data.

Please also keep an eye out for our next special END OF SEASON edition! It's the only place to find out which guilds and players took the top spots in TIER 2 and TIER 3 brawls this season ⚔️

As always, thanks for reading and please post feedback, suggestions, corrections, or whatever in the comments. We love chatting back with the community ❤️💪

I don't agree that last in Tier 3 should earn more than first in Tier 2. But I do think bottom 3rd in Tier 3 should earn more than all but the top 2 of Tier 2. I do think the implementation of the SPS rewards will help in this regard, as the SPS rewards will be split among all guilds in each tier.

Interesting point duce! Maybe there are more nuanced approaches like that which can be tried out. The main point is that it feels like the rewards system is not optimized to promote advancement right now.

Man, well done as always. Beautiful, in-depth, and on-point with sharp data and observations. You and @moros are rocking it and I love reading these reports. I can't wait until they catch fire like they deserve.

thanks man! appreciate it greatly 😀 this is some interesting valuable knowledge that we hope can make a difference.
