Cleanly Swept

in Splinterlands18 hours ago

I can't even remember the last time I wrote anything about Splinterlands, which is because I don't have much to write about it. I enjoy playing and competing on the rankings, but since most of the "top" accounts are the same handful of scholars, the ranking system just doesn't make sense. That and my "RNG" luck seems so bad against those same accounts, it just takes out most of the joy of playing the game. People with land resources are excited about that part, but if playing the game is just bots and scholars - it makes no sense to me.

While it is only nearing the end of round 1 of the Modern Intermediate Invitational GF, for the first time ever, I have got a clean sweep. And since the round hasn't ended yet, it is without anyone fleeing the battle, so I won them all. Despite not having a great set of gold cards, I only play in the gold tournaments, because there is a bit less crowding. I generally don't do that well, but I am usually closer to the top, than the bottom.

It is funny, because I am generally not an overly competitive person, but I like to compete in things that interest me and there is a relatively even playing field. Most of my life and in most things I have been the perennial underdog, not expected to win. Yet I am often also seen as someone to beat. It has been a weird situation, that has been the same from childhood all the way to now, including in the workplace. Even a few friends who are also ex-colleagues have noted how people seem to take glee when I lose at something, even though I lose often. Normally this kind of behaviour comes down to jealousy,

But what the fuck are people jealous of?

I'd gladly swap lives with some of these people. They can have the chronic illness, pain, brain injury, financial and work challenges, and my "sunny" disposition. I gave up a long time ago on the notion of "fair" in life, and accept that my own situation is both worse than many, and better than many. What I also realise that the cost of my life has been far higher than the outcome of it. Too many resources spent, for too little gain.

Splinterlands is no exception.

And I wonder if the realisation of this is why so many people aren't actually engaging with the game itself anymore. They have spent a lot on resources, but the gameplay doesn't improve relatively and becomes a net loss. Playing a game on a PlayStation is a net loss also, but they are much. much cheaper and the games change significantly over time, as well as being able to play a massive range of games that keep developing.

But this is crypto, it is different.

As I was saying to a friend the other day who has been complaining about the crypto markets, there is a difference between people in crypto now. Most people in crypto are not in it for blockchain growth and the potential it brings to society, they are in it to get out of it. They are in it so they can make some gains and then sell into a better fiat life. These kinds of people are supporters of the status quo, not supporters of future betterment. This friend is one of them. Most people are like that. They invest into what helps them avoid crappy life, and in the process enrich the very people that are making life so crappy.

Every dollar spent, is a vote cast for the kind of world we want.

I have cast a lot of votes for Splinterlands.

It might be money wasted, but at least I feel that it is still money spent on potentially making the world a slightly better economic place. I could have spent the same amount on a lot of other things, including PlayStations and many games, and I could have used my time on those instead. But, who does that help? So much money is being spent in the world, and look at the kind of world we have voted for - is it getting better? I don't believe so. In comparison to the global economy, crypto is a tiny sliver of value, but is punching well above its weight in terms of impact and attention. If people were smart, they would understand why this is the case, and start investing in, because while no one knows about any particular token, the industry is undervalued at the moment.

But people keep using their dollar votes on what is familiar.

The greedy and the corrupt.

In round two of the tournament, it is likely I will only win a match or two.
Any win is unexpected.

Up your land game this Christmas break.

You will be pleasantly surprised with the price shock in the new year. You must have noticed that you currently earn about 160 DEC/hr from land, that is 3840 DEC/day, 57600 for a 15 day season. 1,401,660 DEC/yr. Passively. That translates to ~$1400 at peg, $700 at 50% discount as of now.

I don't know the future, but it is easy to project that this number for you will only be higher.

You can also calculate what other investment is giving you $700 a year in dividend, and at what amount of original investment.

I am not making these numbers up. :)

The problem is the depreciation of the assets required to get return. My original investments into various pieces is very high considering the return on them. Most of the cards I have had to buy, are almost worthless now. The land I bought is far, far lower than what I bought it for etc. And I all the SPS I have, I clouding all earned abd got throu Apr etc, is worth less than what I paid for sone of it.

Perhaps the flywheel will kick in at some point.

Yes, cards I can understand, that is a depreciating asset, but so is your car. Yes, it gets you from point A to B. Cards keep you entertained, at least they do for me.

I bought my land in the pre-sale for $7000.

It had paid me handsomely so far, and continue to pay dividends.

Have a look at the lad I have. I think I paid more than half of what you paid for all of yours. Not quite a great return.

timing :)

PS: you have 17 plots, clearly you haven't paid half of $7k or $3.5K for that :)

That translates to $200/plot :) You clearly overpaid in that case.

some of my plots were 600. Definitely over paid.

Oh, and the keep was 2000 - and has produced close to zero. :D

That is clearly the largest mistake...

for that price you could have bought 200 common plots for $10 a piece.

common grain, iron, stone plots have been $10 for more than a year...

Have you thought about just playing tournaments or brawls? Those ones where you can submit your teams ahead of time. I know how you feel though. It's just kind of blah now. I had bigger hopes and expectations for it.

Yeah, but then I would have to scholar my cards. I have spent a crapload on cards, and can't even use most of them now as I can only compete in modern.

Shows how much I pay attention! What does scholar mean in this context?

Someone else playing the account. If you look at the top twenty or thirty in Modern champion, there is only a handful of people playing. Very few their own account.

Oh, okay. Well that sucks...

Yeah, it takes some joy out of it.

Awesome, finally another Splinterlands post from you, even if it is not a very rosy one :)
I actually think you should post more about Splinterlands. I am really into Splinterlands, but even I learned something from your post today. What I learned is that I don't play gold foil tournaments as I don't qualify power wise. Perhaps I should consolidate all my gold foils into this account and see if I can qualify for at least some of the gold foil tournaments.

And yes, I agree crypto as an industry seems undervalued right now. Though BTC might not be undervalued, I am trying to buy more of it, but the price stays stubbornly above my price... And I don't want to raise it either as it is already 308% above my average buy price in 2022...

I am betting big on ETH with some small bets on ONDO, AERO, NEAR, SOL, LINK and a tiny bit on Hive and SPS :)

I think that makes sense. I have two accounts, but one doesn't play anything or do anything.

I have heard around 70 might be the floor (is it it flaw) this round.

This really resonates with me as im just a beginer in Splinterlands and it increasingly feels like an ecosystem built around capital efficiency rather than play, and that naturally pushes genuine competitors to the margins as for mr i'd have to wait to earn a bit and channel same to the game. The clean sweep is still impressive though.

The competition in the game doesn't seem to interest many people. All they are doing at the top is getting a scholar to play in order to collect SPS and Reward cards for them.

Jealousy itself is like a plague these days, sometimes you even get little bits of sibling jealousy, and there's nothing that I hate more than that. I mean someone who's supposed to be joyful at your success, turns to be glad at your failures, I mean reallife failures, not in games. If it came from a stranger, it'd be easy to overlook.

I suppose being seen as an underdog serves to inspire you to strive to win more in life. Thats what happens when others love to see us fail, we're motivated to prove then wrong and deny them that devilish happiness.

Splinterlands is a popular game, but I have no experience with it. I'm not used to playing games on mobile. I don't play due to lack of time.
