I moved to Lithuania around 8 months ago, after spending five years living in Denmark (and a bit in Sweden). One of the most challenging things that I always find when moving to a new country is, of course, learning the language.
Me mudé a Lituania hace 8 meses, después de pasar cinco años vivinedo en Dinamarca (y uno en Suecia). Una de las cosas más difíciles que he tenido que hacer al cambiarme de país ha sido, por supuesto, aprender el idioma que se habla en el país.
I basically only speak - fluently - two languages: Spanish and English. Some people may think this is enough as I - most of the times - travel to any country and there will be at least a person speaking any of those languages. When living in Denmark, at least for myself, I had no issues when finding a job - I mean doing software development really only needs the thorughly understanding of English, I have nevere used Spanish for coding to be honest, that would be weird - somehow.
Realmente sólo hablo de manera fluida dos idiomas: español e inglés. Es gracioso la verdad, por que algunas personas consideran que esos dos idiomas son suficientes, ya que si intento viajar a algún país, siempre voy a encontrar a alguien que o hable inglés o hable español. Cuando vivía en Dinamarca, al menos para mí, no tuve ningún problema por no hablar el idioma, por ejemplo al tratar de encontrar trabajo. Me dedicaba a la ingeniería de software y como es natural para este campo sólo neceistas saber inglés, nunca he programado en español - en verdad me suena un poco raro hacerlo.
I anyways went to some classes, but the fact that learning danish was like learning 2 different languages at the same time: the spoken one and the written one, I just naturally gave up and as I mentioned before, it was not really an issue. On the contrary, my partner really needed to speak the language to develop professionally - so we just jumped to his home country to make the process a bit smoother.
Igualmente intenté ir a clases presenciales, pero el danés es un idioma tan difícil - parece que tienes que aprender dos idiomas a la vez: el hablado y el escrito - que me rendí y como mencinaba anteriorment, no me dio ningún problema para encontrar trabajo. En cambio para mi pareja, sí supuso un problema a la hora de desarrollarse profesionalmente, y como es natural nos vinimos a su país de nacimiento.
Here in Lithuania I am not really developing myself as a software engineer anymore - I just do that in my free time. Honestly, there are too many good developers in this country, I am not sure I would be that good and I just continued the natural path towards AI engineering or Data Science. Anyways, long story short, I've exprienced a lot of rejections because I don't speak the language. Of course, I would like to also go a bit more into consultancy and freelancing - as I am a bit fed up with the concept of "company culture" - so I really need to speak Lithuanian.
En Lituania no estoy realmente trabajando como ingeniera de software, sólo lo hago en mi tiempo libre. Si les soy sincera, hay tan buenos desarrolladores en el país que no se si yo sería buena aquí en ese campo así que continué con mi carrera normal hacia la intelligencia artificial y ciencia de datos. Les hago la historia un poco mas corta: aquí si he sentido que hay algún problema con el hecho de que no domino el idioma, sobre todo por el área de la ciencia de datos, ya que en muchas compañías los datos están en Lituano.
I don't know what is wrong with me lately, but I just can't learn the language. I mean the language is not easy, I get it but it almost seems like I can learn any programming language out there within days and I just can't - yet - speak Lithuanian. I don't know what I am doing wrong! I have signed up for online classes, I downloaded some app similar to Duolingo and I have like tried to learn through YouTube but it has been a - fair - disaster.
De verdad no sé que me pasa ultimamente, pero me está costando muchísimo aprender el idioma. Obviamente, el idioma en sí no es fácil pero últimamente me resulta más fácil aprender un nuevo lenguaje de programación que de aprender un nuevo idioma en sí. No sé que estoy haciendo mal. He intentado aprender apuntándome a clases online, por YouTube o con aplicaciones móviles tipo Duolingo.
What do you think is the best way for me to learn a new language like Lithuanian? I want to learn it in less than a year - 6 months if possible. I am native Spanish and English speaker so honestly I jsut don't even remember how or when I learned how to speak these languages - so I just don't know how to learn a new one.
¿Cuál crees que se la mejor manera para mí de aprender un idioma nuevo? Me gustaría aprenderlo en menos de un año - 6 meses sería lo ideal. Soy nativa al español y al inglés y realmente no me acuerdo de cómo aprendí estos dos idiomas, fue obviamente de forma natural como lengua materna. Y no sé como aprender uno nuevo.

Gracias. Sí, lo que mejor se me da hoy en día es adaptarme. Eso sí, a veces necesito irme a nuevos sitios y eso a veces no es tan bueno. Es bueno también quedarse en un mismo sitio más tiempo.
